Grace Kang-MoonCLD Journal Entries 2nd set: The Emotionally Healthy ChurchIn the introduction of the book, the writer shared his personal experience about how wrong counseling is dangerous. It is the same in the Christian community. “Many Christian leaders have delegated emotional issues to the therapist’s office.” I have heard many times that if we want to be faithful Christians, we should lay down ourselves. It is true but the problem is we misunderstand that we must not think about our emotional aspects. In other words, we mistakenly think that we should suppress our negative feelings. Then, we are making a huge iceberg in our hearts as Scazzero, the writer said. The major problem that the writer raised is that “Jesus penetrates only superficially into the depth of our persons.” He might have prayed, fasted, mediated and worshiped more than me, but he said that he could not rejoice in God. Later, he noticed that there were some emotional layers that God had not touched yet.Scazzero sld say, “The question is your homework.” Christian leaders are the same. We do not need to pretend that we are righteous, faithful, and intellectual. We are just creatures. One thing that I want to reframe is that the third principle does not mean we should have low self-esteem. Someone once said that low self-esteem is another name for pride. It is good if we live in brokenness and vulnerability, but we cannot think that we are too weak to accomplish God’s purposes. God wants to do his work through us even though we are imperfect. Therefore we should remember that we are weak, but we are strong in the power of God.Fourth, we need to receive the gift of limits. I think that this principle is deeply related with the third principle. Accepting our limits means that we embrace our weakness and brokenness. The important thing is that the writer did not say that we just should accept our limits but receive the “gift” of them. In other words, there are gifts in our limits. I know of a growind us. Gratitude involves knowing that we are held secure by a loving God, and that the God we worship is trustworthy despite the unbearable sorrow. Karl Barth said, “To believe in Jesus Christ means to become thankful.”While I was reading the book, I was curious about the wife, Geri, who said, “I quit.” I read her book to learn more about her experience and recommended it to my sister because my sister and I are both pastor’s wives. She wrote, “God invites us to take responsibility for our own lives and not be over-responsible for others.” Frankly speaking, I did not understand it from my cultural view at first. Especially in Korea, being a pastor’s wife means that they give up their personal lives. I do not exist and a pastor’s wife just exists. There is a Korean joke saying that even though it is Sabbath day, pastors and their wives cannot get Sabbath. (‘안식일’이 아니라 ‘안 쉬는’ 날이다.) But I changed my stereotype. I want to be like Mary not Martha. I hope that many pastor’s wives can stop preible, practice good Christian ethics, and flexibility for diverse circumstances. Also, a driver who has experience in different circumstances like paved or muddy roads, driving on a rainy day, or on a frozen road can drive safer compared to a non-experienced driver. I am not saying that experience is equal to how long we have ministered. Even though we have the same length of ministry experience, we will at times learn more when we choose a minor and needy church than a cozy and well-organized church. But if we also do not have any experience in a bigger church, it is also problematic because we can learn from both of them. We may learn how to lead a big community amongst other things. With this illustration of driving, if we always drive on the wide, clean, non-traffic, non-obstacle road, we will not have the experience to drive in tougher situations. Above all, it is dangerous. Because of a driver’s mistake, others might be in a trouble. Someone will die. It is the same in our communivel. It is just a stereotype. If we are leaders we should be able to invite the congregation to our world so that they can explore and develop their lives as new leaders for God. Also, if we are members we should be curious about the journey and be ready for the future. If congregations are not interested in filling in as new leaders, the spiritual journey is meaningless. This past summer, my husband and I took a road trip from Boston to Dallas. It took a long time. When my husband was wrestling with tiredness, I felt bad for him but I could not help him because I was not ready to drive on highway even though I had a driving license. When a leader should take all burdens for others, people would think that it is such a beautiful sacrifice. But it does not assure a good relationship between a leader and congregations in the long term.5. Knowing when and where to stopIt is evident that we cannot drive continually without a break. There is something that we can see only when we stop. While.

Grace Kang-Moon (Box # 359B)Book review: Jacques Ellul, The Presence of the Kingdom (1948)Someone said, “To Christian, the world is a spiritual battlefield not a playground.”I agree with this statement. Jacques Ellul even wrote in his book as “The Christian life is always an agony.” Christians cannot be separated from the world, because this world is where we belong. We cannot declare that we are free from the sin of this world. Whenever I watch the news, it confirms that evolutionism is not true. They say all creatures are evolving, but we are becoming wicked and selfish. Jacques said all around us we constantly see the action of Satan. It means we cannot improve the world by ourselves. Modern man can no longer have confidence in the virtues of the individual, in his kindness, or his energy, because we are no longer confronted by individual sins but by the state of sin of humanity. Christians are followers of Jesus and that means we should live differently. But do we live differently?nswer or the best method in this book, but the important thing is that we should be the salt and light of the world. The common thing between the role of the salt and the light is that they consume themselves. They sacrifice themselves to be salty and bright. Sacrificing like salt and light, that is what God command us. The presence of a Christian is like sheep in the midst of wolves. Sheep have very bad eyesight. That is why they have to listen to the shepherd’s voice. When sheep are obedient, they can be safe. They are also a symbol of sacrifice and humble. In Jacques’s opinion, we must accept the domination of other people and offer the daily sacrifice of their lives. What does it mean that we must accept the domination of other people? Can we not be leaders in the world? In Korea, there have been many discussions about this issue. Some pastors say Christians need to have worldly power to influence the world. On the other hand, others insist that we should lower ourselves for the ne The world ought to be saved by God’s way, not by human efforts. But sometimes, we forget this end, the God’s glory. We even use God for our glory. In other words, everything has become a means like Ellul said. This world has become a slave of “techniques.” Human beings have been using this technique or skills to develop our world. Why do we really use these techniques? Where are our collective ends? They have been vague by the means. What we invented for ourselves have become masters now. We became obedient consumers. Ellul gave us an example of a guy who wants to be happy and have plenty of goods to consume. We have seen this consumerism pop up in the Christian community. There are lots of reasons for attending church today, not just to worship God. We even choose a church that attracts us and make us feel at peace or something special. Churches are a means to some people, but not to all. Ellul also wrote that a man will die for his own well-being or because he himself has already becr see anywhere but straight ahead. Behind them is a fire that makes shadows on the cave wall in front of the prisoners as people carry various objects past the fire. The prisoners, seeing nothing but shadows, assume the shadows are all there is reality. The phenomenon might be described as the external presentation of the fact. We read newspapers and listen to the radio. What comes through our sense organ becomes the equivalent of truth, because we tend to trust what we see and hear. Especially if it is from the media, it is easily accepted as truth by the evidence of power. In other words, most phenomena might be shadows and not reality. Man also needs some logical connection and relation between these phenomena. Ellul called this concept the “explanatory myth.” There are complex phenomena and man wants to receive it in a simplified and condensed way so when they try to “explain” some phenomena they use their means, shadows as thinking it is true and right. Whatever happens to him andtian’s calling to be salt of the world to preserve it.This life style requires a revolution. Some Christians might have experience in this. They were rejected when they tried to share the gospel with non-Christians. When we read Mathew 7:6, we misunderstand that we have pearls and non-Christians are like swine who do not know how valuable the pearls are. But this verse is not about the gospel. The gospel is good news that everyone should hear. The revolution starts when we realize this fact. We are all sinners and we need a new life. The creation of such a life is a work that is both collective and individual. Secular people might see Jesus through both an individual life and our collective lives. One Christian’s life and our community’s role are both significant. When we become servants not masters, they meet Jesus and the gospel. This revolution is about God because we cannot do anything without Him. We just follow Him.I have met two types of Christian leaders. Some Christians become

Grace Kang-MoonCLD Journal Entries 1st set: Renovation of the ChurchKent Carlson and Mike Lueken, pastors of Oak Hills Church had not seen many new believers become a part of the church. When Kent attended Willow Creek Community Church, he got an idea about seeker-targeted services. The idea is to take the most convenient time in the week, Sunday morning, and dedicate it not to churched people but to the non-churched. It was “successful” outwardly. Lots of non-Christians visited the church and registered to be church members. But in a few years, there was something unhealthy sense among many of them in the leadership. They called it “Monster”. There were still many people, offerings, fellowship and interesting programs. The more the church was growing, the more pastors and staffs felt empty and exhausted. “We immersed ourselves in all the various church-growth strategies and kept analyzing how we could continue to attract new people and fold them into the life and ministry of the churcfocusing on. The positive thing is that they did not look for new programs, but they needed a new foundation. They encouraged people to be formed in the image of Christ. They started to look to themselves and not others, and had time to be intimate with God, but it did not go as well as they thought. The pastor confessed that they spent countless hours reading about the issues surrounding their spiritual formation, but they did not pray enough. In other words, they focused on their spiritual formation the wrong way. If the church focuses on only individual spiritual formation too much, they will also be put in “narcissism.” When spiritual formation is a priority, we will also be consumers, because our previous pure motive can be transformed to “spiritual elitism.” If our goal is not making and being humble disciples of Jesus, our time, offerings, and efforts are to make good “products” for consumers. Since people think they are “spiritually mature,” they will look for a “better” churcheves God but she does not want to go to church. How can this happen? Now I noticed that she was also a consumer not a disciple of Jesus. But I cannot blame her, because many churches and pastors are training Christians to be demanding consumers, not disciples. What is discipleship? It is literally living like Jesus Christ. It is becoming “disciples” of Him. For this, we should be providers. Of course God is our perfect provider, but we should be also providers like Him. We are adjusted to consume and receive, not produce and share. God might want to not only communicate with us but also to see all nations unite like when I was happy to see my students help, share and communicate well with one another. After I finished this book, the feeling that I had first was “joy,” even though the contents were not joyful. It contained the shameful reality about Christians in this world, but I found hope that some pastors are seeking the healthy church leadership and trying to overcome the consumerisrds, the individual parts in the system are different. Also, the size of the congregation, the part of a system, can change quickly. It is not all the same. A system is so dynamic and active that we cannot quantify it. It is difficult to catch the function and purpose of the system. When we want to know the purpose of systems, we should investigate how the system works, because all systems seek their individual goals or purposes. For example, a system is constantly functioning to “survive” even in a very tiny mineral. Therefore, we can see the deep relationship between a system’s behavior and its purpose. The foundation of this behavior is “stock.” A stock is “the memory of the history of changing flows within the system,”Systems are always changing. In this flow, a feedback loop naturally appears. A feedback loop consists of a cause and effect, so it can cause stocks to maintain at their level. For example, in a church, if the congregation grows, they will hire more pastors or build m church of being responsible in attending church, but he or she accepted it as nagging. The member did not follow the pastor’s advice and kept missing Sunday worship, so the pastor was offended and rebuked him more. This is the problematic aspect of this loop. If this “negative” reinforcing is developed in the church and congregation, the church might be in a trouble soon. So they should be aware of watching how the reinforcing feedback loops work.As systems usually serve as a source of productivity or stability, “they need to be managed for resilience.” Resilience is the ability to repair or restore the system themselves from diverse changes. We can find this system in some churches especially those planted in tough circumstances. Although they lack money, staff, and buildings, they restore their community and their system. Sometimes the harsh situation helps them to strengthen their faith and community. Instead of helping them financially, it is more important for them to rely on Chrs.

Grace Moon-KangThe book review of “A Testament of Hope”In reading Martin Luther King Jr.’s book, I learned that a human can be very incredible. Especially when he said “If physical death is the price that some must pay to free their children from a permanent life of psychological death, then nothing could be more Christian,” I was thrilled by this sentence. I doubt that I will answer like him. To review his sermons and essays, I am going to share about my experience in working in elementary school. The school, where I worked for three years, also was not separated from violence. Fights among students were normal, between a teacher and a student, and even teachers and parents sometimes fought. The book reminded me of two kids that I taught for the first time. One was “normal” and smart, and the other had a handicap, meaning he was fourteen years old but had the mental capacity of a ten year old. But the normal boy was not “normal” in some meanings. He would hit the handicapped student m did. He was arrested many times and his house was bombed twice. He was even assassinated. He confessed that he was also tempted to react with bitterness, but instead he sought to “transform the suffering into a creative force.” We have heard of the benefits of suffering in the Bible, but we hope that it will not happen in our lives. He proclaimed that the suffering and agonizing moments drew him closer to God. That is why he could endure in suffering without “self-defense.” In his thought about self-defense, it also reminded me of Malcolm X who was also a human right activist. Malcolm X said, “I am not against using violence in self-defense. I don’t even call it violence when it’s self-defense, I call it intelligence.” King and Malcolm were both human right activists, but the way to accomplish their goal was totally different. One of the main themes of his philosophy was “agape.” When I read that, I was skeptical because we are all humans. We are selfish and sinful. We cannot love as Gself with his fist. The handicapped boy said, “Then, my friend will hurt.” “Agape means a recognition of the fact that all life is interrelated. If you harm me, you harm yourself.” We are all brothers, sisters and friends in God. I am not saying the small boy knew the theory of agape, but I am sure it resembled a behavior from it. Great story! The most impressive chapter of his book was the “Letter from Birmingham City Jail.” It was good for me to understand his philosophy and deep explanations about the nonviolent movement. He used the word “creative extremist” to refute against some people that spoke of their nonviolent activity in Birmingham as extreme. I thought that extreme is always used as a negative meaning, but Jesus was also an extremist in love. The explicit thing is that it is not easy to be an extremist in good will as Jesus did. This is why I misunderstood that the word is used only in a bad way. “So the question is not whether we will be extremists but what kind of extrempeaceful and united. Someone has to act to change the unchangeable situation as Martin did. I am not saying that I am righteous. I am emphasizing the need of action for our goal, the kingdom of God. In his sermon, we hear that “This is no time for romantic about freedom and empty philosophical debate. This is a time for action.” It means that we need people to act together. If we think that I am the only one able to solve this problem, the result would be negative. In fact, there were many followers and organizations to show their action with Martin. His new definition about the law was impressive, too. “Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.” I have a personal example. When a player gets a medal in the Olympics, the Korean government offers them a benefit like pension or exemption from military duty. Until a few years ago, there was a big gap in the welfare between Olympic medal winners and Special Olympic winners. After a long fight for the equal treatment, special Olympice office and kept this for his quiet day of reading and silence and meditation on Tuesdays, and an entire evening with his family. His effort to spend enough time with his family reminded me of the story of Bob Pierce, the founder of World Vision. In 1950, Bob Pierce founded the world’s largest Christian relief and development agency. His influence was as amazing as King’s. Unfortunately, his unstoppable zeal and passion caused disastrous consequences for his family. Unfortunately, his daughter committed suicide as struggling with depression and loneliness. By the final year of his life, at the age of sixty-four, Bob Pierce was alienated from everyone in his immediate family. I do not know that much about Martin’s private life with his family, but I believe that he would be a good husband and a sweet father.Martin had enthusiasm for nonviolent resistance that avoids “not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit.” In my opinion, avoiding internal violence of nds

Grace Kang-MoonExposition/interpretation of the ethical meaning of a selected biblical textPrologueThis is the parody of The Screwtape Letters that was written by C.S. Lewis. I am going to explain about commercialism in our Christian life, and it will be able to be used on a Sunday school lesson.Dear. WormwoodThis is my 32nd letter. Do you remember my last thirty-one letters? I said that a human being is so simple because they always seek money and strive to be successful, so it is very easy to make them commit sin. Today I will tell you how to use their weakness, especially pastors and the church. They are such good targets. Do you remember the story that our “enemy” Jesus ruined our plan that was supposed to make the temple like “a den of robbers?” Let me tell you about the old story that happened a thousand years ago. You need to listen carefully, because you can also apply this rule into today’s circumstance, too.A long time ago, there was the temple which functioned like churches It is a good way to use people who have authority like priests and pastors because they are also humans who are easily tempted by money and success. By the way, Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He tipped over the tables of the money changes and the chairs of those selling droves. Can you imagine my feeling when I saw the scene? I almost went out of my mind because he always ruins our plans. The priests were doing ‘good’ and the commercial transactions in the temple were very favorable before Jesus cleaned the temple. Do you know how much was charged for the exchange of money and animals? They were sold at a very high price! For example, pigeons, which could be sacrificed by those too poor to buy a lamb, sold for about sixteen times as much inside the temple as they did outside. How wonderful! The temple was becoming “good” before us, but Jesus ruined our beautiful works! If he were not there, we could keep feeding the monsters that wereuse it reminds us of human nature. One more thing, you know the difference between the temple and the church? Gentiles have irritated us since they accepted the gospel, which is “sad” news! We should have worked hard because of the extending worshipers. But do not worry, because we could abuse their passion for God. As you learned, the Gentiles were not allowed to be closer to the sanctuary than the outer court. It was there that the “commercialism” became epidemic. Now the barrier between the Gentiles and the Jew has gone. The day when it left, my heart was torn because the barrier was a tool for our dreams come true. I will tell you about the barrier more next time.Do you remember the second statement of Jesus at the temple, “But you are making it a ‘den of robbers?’” It is from Jeremiah 7:11. Do not forget it. Jesus was proficient in the Law. I do not want to explain about Jeremiah because he was also our strong enemy. He was one who knew our secret that unauthentic worshipers couldd non-Christians to the path of life are teaching the “impure” gospel. Good for us! Though they are technically pastors or religious leaders, they do not really nurture people in becoming more like Jesus. Have you ever heard of “commercialism” in the church? It is very exhilarating when Christians fall in love with it! Christian leaders usually put too much weight on external outcomes. They often fall into the trap of evaluating spiritual work by numbers. Of course the trap is what we made. Seeking for external results in the church is the best way to make them consumers. We have started to make “religious consumers” instead of “religious robbers.” With our beautiful efforts, the church is trying to attract people because they trust that attendance is the most important thing. You will know that we get lost and tired whenever Christians wholeheartedly pray. Here is good news! Today, even though they talk much in the church, they do not pray a lot. Even though the gospel was spread to t easy because our enemy is so strong more than you know. Remember to place monsters in each church because when the monster appears, it never stops demanding to be fed. Did I tell you the name of the monster? It is “religious commercialism.” The more the monsters grow the more the religious leader’s personal ambitions come alive.Tonight, I am going to attend a conference that is prepared for us. The speaker never talks about the gospel. For his reward, I presented a luxurious car, but he misunderstood that it was given by God. Since he talks only about the blessings of Christians not suffering, his church is getting bigger. They are flowing with false Christians even though they might think they are “real” Christians. This is what we want. The pastor is the perfect model of using his personal ambition to be a famous and successful pastor. Always remember our goal. Make the church like “a den of robbers.” Bother Christians from pray and becoming real disciples of Jesus.Your affectionatece.
