I have read ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ during this semester. It was published in 2012 and the author is John Green, New York Times best-selling author. Before writing it, he had worked as a student chaplain at a children’s hospital. This can be one reason the heroes are young people who have cancer. I had a hard time reading the book because it has many slangs and medical words that I could not easily understand. Except these words, it was quite easy to keep reading it as the length of sentences is short and much of it is usually colloquial talk between people.Hazel is a 17-year-old girl and she has a serious cancer. She falls in love with August, who also suffers from cancer. They always talk about ‘An Imperial Affliction’, Hazel’s favorite book. They are so curious about the unwritten part of the book that they travel to Holland to meet the author. Since the trip, August becomes weaker and one day he dies from his cancer in hospital. After a while, Hazel finds one letter which August sent to the author of the book for Hazel’s eulogy. With this letter, this novel finishes. The most impressive part of this book is the scene where Hazel, Isaac and August gather in church one night and prepare for August’s funeral. Though Hazel and Isaac started to read the eulogy in front of August with humor, they end up crying. I shed tears in the library as well because I came to think ‘If I were one of them...’ It can never be happy to prepare for the day when I or someone I love is going to die. This scene lets me be grateful for the moment I am staying with precious people without concern for these problems.I enjoyed reading this book and I will read it again in the future because it gives me many questions that I have to answer for the rest of my life. They are about what life, death, love and relationship with the universe are. I have rarely reflected on such things as I’m just busy doing some report or presentation day by day. The experiences of 17-year-old boy and girl tell me to find the meaning of my life. I also recommend people read this book. Especially those will be touched who don’t regard their lives as meaningful or don’t fully appreciate the moment they love someone. The Fault in Our Star (John Green)
