Teaching Tip 1Hospital Storyboard Activity InstructionThis can be used for advanced course of intermediate level. Through this activity, students can explore the theme of hospital. Students will be able to make their own situation regarding hospital and present it to the class.Time : about 50 munitesMaterials needed : name cards (which can show who is doctor, nurse and patient), list of names of disease, example script, poster boardIntroduce phrases that might be useful in hospital : ‘go to hospital’,’go to see a doctor’,’have a fever’,’get burnt’,’don’t’ feel well’,’have a sour stomach’,’sprained ankle’,’my tooth is loose’,’have a muscle ache’ and so forth.Split the students into groups and in group students can decide the role : doctor, nurse and patient. My Teaching PhilosophyLanguage acquisition is the capacity to apply it to the realistic situations. I have seen many students who studied in slient classroom and only about reading and reading and reading but after graduation become dumb. I was also one of them. I had gotten good score in high school and memorize many vocabularies even including jargons but i was afraid of using English.Event though I had studied English over ten years, I still had difficulty listening and communicating with English. And especially speaking was the big struggle. Likewise If a students are able to get good score in many test but can’t use the language in real world, we can’t say the student is good English speaker.So I am trying to be familiar with the communicative approach. This is because I think communicative approach is relavant to connect people together through using and speaking language. I can use a variety of contents in this approach. For example I can bring anything that will help people connect like movie or any video clips. Students can be exposed to their target language in multiple settings. I feel this will be able to make students (and even me) feel interesting to acquire language.Furthermore, in this stage, combining student’s interest with proper materials would be important. So I will ask children’s interests first and try to motivate them to join the class by exposing many materials they are into.Using 80/20 strategy is important in my classroom. This principle can encourage students to practically speak English. I can give short instruction(20% of class time) and let student practice by themselves or with pair or group.(80% of class time). I didn’t have many time to use with my mouth and tongue when I was high school student and it made me dumb at the end. Not to repeat this mistake, I will give enough time to practice English inside the classroom so that they can use English even outside of my class.I teach English because I feel happy whenever with English (as a tool) communicating with someone and know more about them. As one poet said like ‘meeting new person means a lot because they would come along with their own past, present and future’, I think meeting new people and learning from them is really important part of all humanity. And as Korean, who has used English as second language and has lived in one ethinicity and one culture, using English means communicating foreigners who have different background.In conclusion, I will try my best to provide students with proper learning strategy I can give them. So my short term goal is to let my students just learn and equip English words and sentences first. But my long term goal is to let them experience same feeling that I have felt through talking with diverse people with English.
