I’m the president of the United States. What I can do is make sure that I am passing laws that help all people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and most in need. That in turn is going to help lift up the African-American community.” As he said, his attempts to perform Health Care Reform, to deal with messes in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to rebound the economy back to the position have shown not r of New York for nine years, was First Lady of the United States of America from 1993 to 2001 and a leading candidate for Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, and John McCain, who was the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, U.S. Senate from 1986 to 2004, Senate Commerce Committee, and Republican presidential nominee in 2008, Mr. Obama has drawn attentions from Americans in his numerous speeches and policies to become the 44th president of the U.S.A.As soon as Barack Hussein Obama rose up to his presidency position, he pushed number of policies which sparked conflicts between Democrats and Republicans. The major policy that made the most disagreements was the Health Care Reform. This domestic policy was designed to make all Americans to hold health insurance regardless of their pre-existing conditions. In order to turn most people eligible for Medicaid, the bills which include subsidies to low-income families to buy health insurance turned out to be around $950billion over thit easier to finance expenditures in long-run. In addition, public option which will increase market competition in insurance market would also contribute to financing the health care costs.It is true that the cost of Health Care Reform is massive. The implementation of such policy, however, would not only benefit low income earners and workers in small businesses, which indirectly include African-Americans, but also people with pre-existing conditions either who could not gain health insurance or whose insurance were unjustifiably cancelled.Other than Health Care Reform, Mr. Obama’s government had another dilemma to solve; troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Mr. Obama pledged to end the war in Iraq during his campaign, he announced to withdraw most of American combat troop by August 2010 and the remaining troops by December 2011. The main focus of Barack Obama was more troubled war in Afghanistan with Al Qaeda and Taliban. Mr. Obama has declared to send additional 17,000 troops in 2009Obama has set the new level of taxations for people in different income brackets. Advocating increasing marginal tax for the rich and lowering for the low and middle income families, Mr. Obama has earned criticism from Republicans and applause from Democrats. Dennis Prager, the advocate of liberty and small government, insisted that Mr. Obama government’s new level of taxation on rich is ridiculous. Yet, marginal income tax for people in the top bracket in America has been decreasing since 1993 and has been low at 35% since 2003, which has been deepening the wealth gap in America. In contrast, Mr. Obama’s new level of taxation for low and middle income families included generous tax cuts for who earn less than $25,000 and removal of capital gains taxes for small businesses.In addition to tax cuts, total of $787 billion stimulus package passed democrats’ partisan law. And on March 2009, Obama administration introduced $75 billion incentives to help troubled homeowners which was planned bama’s policies have been successful even though there were a lot of difficulties. The Health Care Reform legislation had initiated strong oppositions from Republicans as the law was contradictory to what they have believed in. Furthermore, Republicans held different view for economic stimulus package that Mr. Obama came out with, especially in the matter of taxation and subsidiaries. While Democrats supported subsidiaries to those who are in need and larger tax to wealthy Americans and lower tax for low and middle income earners, Republicans deemed such policy as lavish expenditure and unfair. Principles of Economics Essay AssignmentThe principle:The cost of something is what you give up to get itThe study of Economics introduces the concept of the choice. The world is in scarcity of resources. For this reason, there can never be enough to supply every consumer with the goods and services they desire. This means consumers need to make appropriate choices with limited resources. As a result, consumers need to choose the goods and services that are most suitable and desirable so that they can achieve utility maximisation. The choice is made by buyers but the choice always creates costs which should also be incurred by the decision-makers. The costs created in the case are called opportunity costs, which can be explained through the simple model graph of Production Possibilities Frontier. Nevertheless, Consumers should take two possible costs into consideration; explicit costs and implicit costs.The costs created by one’s choice are referred as opportunity costs. Generally speaking, opportunity cost is the best alternative choice that one should give up in order to gain the other thing. For example, what could a student do if he does not study on the weekend? He could go to the movie, or party. However, by studying on the weekend, the student would not be able to do so, hence giving up the possible values that he could win. As from the example, the concept of opportunity costs, which is one of the key concepts of economics, refers not only to monetary terms but also to non-monetary valuables such as time, pleasure and output foregone by producing alternative goods.In economics, the concept of opportunity costs is well shown and explained in simple graph called Production Possibilities Frontier (PPF), which shows the maximum possible level of commodity that can be produced with the combination of the other alternative commodity. Figure 1 from the appendix, a sample PPF when ceteris paribus, shows the PPF of two possible commodities produced; x and y. If the combination of products x and y moves from the point A to B, the choice of increasing the production of commodity x by 10 requires merely the opportunity costs of commodity y by 5. However, if the combination moves from C to D, expanding production of 10 x generates opportunity cost of 50 y. As the opportunity costs of y are different depending on the figure x, these figures signifies the importance of producer’s choice of minimising the sacrifice of the alternative choice and making the maximum outcome of the combination.As mentioned above, there are two types of costs that can be generated from opportunity costs; explicit costs and implicit costs. In fact, when explicit costs can be presented through graphs such as PPF easily, it is rather complicated to include implicit costs on the graphs; and when explicit costs alone can be calculated easily, including implicit costs makes calculation more complex. One ways to explain function of explicit and implicit costs as opportunity costs is the example of capital investment. If business invests $10,000, the explicit costs turn out to be $10,000. However, economists should also take the possible earnings from $10,000 if it were not invested but, for instance, deposited in bank, which earns interest rates. The foregone interest rate earnings are one of the examples of implicit costs.To elucidate the concept of opportunity costs, recent America’s economic situation can be referred. Due to the financial crisis which shrank America’s economy, American government announced the implementation of huge stimulus, which is used to stimulate its domestic economy. However, expenditure on domestic economy implies several obvious opportunity costs. One of them is explicit costs of $700billion of stimulus which otherwise could be used on other purposes such as foreign investment. The other cost is implicit costs which were generated by government printing excessive money; thus having raised the prices.To define ‘the cost of something is what you give up to get it;’ the true cost of goods or services is the commingled explicit and implicit costs of goods or services that one gives up. Regarding usage of drone strikes, a lot have been done from American side in both politically and militarily. However, efforts from America seem to be wasted by Pakistani government’s unsubstantial involvement. And America is experiencing significant failure at earning popularity from Pakistani populace.Despite the fact that unmanned drone strikes in Pakistan may be unpopular among Pakistani populace, reluctance of the Pakistan army to cooperate deems them a necessity. Although there was an accident of which drone strike killed civilians who were suspected as terrorist members in village of Shaidi Hassas in Afghanistan, drones also have their job done; killing Sale al-Somali, a top al-Qaeda operations planner in December 2009. If Pakistan remains indecisive about demprove the combat-like situation in Pakistan nor to cooperate with America. In fact, it can be said that the usage of drone strikes has been reaffirmed after the close failure of the Times Square bombing attempt, which is suspected to be planned and carried out by one of the Taliban based in Pakistan. Recently, The United Stis implies the consideration from America’s point of view to avoid stimulating any bad opinions regarding American military activities against Pakistan, despite military officials’ claim that airstrikes would be the best option to getting rid of threats from al-Qaeda.On the other hand, there was the incident which sacrificed 23 innocent lives in Afghanistan in May 2010. After the incident General Stanley A. McChrystal, officer in charge of the U.S military in Afghanistan, apologized to the president Hamid Karzai, admitting that the fault of pilotless drone strikes. In fact, unlike America’s attitude toward Pakistan, the U.S and NATO forces’ assaults have generated statistically the highest civilian casualties since the war in 2001. However, this does not necessarily show that the U.S cares less about Afghanistan. After taking Marja over from the Taliban, America found out there are vast acres of opium field. When Afghan officials claimed to destroy the opium, Americans realized that moistan mercenaries are suspected to bribe Taliban and al-Qaeda to let them cross the highway which links Kabul and Kandahar. Big escort companies seem to have built relationship with high officials in Afghanistan. Although foreign nations are sure of this fact and tried to ban those escort companies from escorting them, continued vigorous attack from terrorists have reassigned those big companies back into their positions to escort Americans and NATO convoys. And another factor which hardens Afghanistan to be free from terrorist is the president of Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai has forced his two top security officials to resign since they maintained fair relationship with American and British officials. This suggests that the president Hamid Karzai was afraid of terrorists and chose to support the sidesing Taliban as proxy fighters against India. However, without abandoning this sort of idea, the U.S has no choice but to increase the use of pilotless drone strikes to go on with its lonely fight against terrorism. There can be suggestions which assert that there is too much danger posed from the usage of drone strikes, for instance what happened in Afghanistan in May 2010. And some optimistic views which says there can be other solutions such as diplomat to come to the consensus with Taliban and al-Qaeda. However, drone strikes have demonstrated significant importance in putting the top operator of Taliban into death, which have diminished the power of Taliban severely and since the announcement from Obama administration that American troops will retreat from Afghanistan which puts less pressure on terrorists made it harder to come to the consensus in any means.
