영문 독후감, 영화감상문 - No Country For Old Men

New Characteristics in Western MovieThe western genre includes various media such as film, TV, literature, and visual art. It is based on the time during and after the middle 19th century that were the pioneering days of America. Most of western movies’ backgrounds involve the barren wilderness, the wild plain, trains, and bars. The story of the western is based on a group of bad men who rob trains or bars, and then a hero who fights them by using a gun and riding a horse or standing on the train. Finally, the hero defeats all of bad men, blows the gun’s muzzle after the fighting, and the movie is over, when the hero disappears somewhere. No Country for Old Men, a recent western movie, has new features that the traditional western movies do not have; no background music, new character`s personalities, and a complex story. The movie does not have any absolute good guy like traditional movie do. Instead, this movie tries to show more realistic view of society. While watching this movie, nality that is realistic, tough, and has high competitive spirit. According to Angela Aleisis, the author of “Prelude to World War II: Racial Unity and the Hollywood Indian,” The Native American arises as an outsider to refined culture and an antagonist to advancement, whereas the cowboy is the generous protagonist (543). Moss could be a kind of cowboy hero like in other western movies, but he is very far from the heroes of traditional western movies. Most of the story is about how he runs away from people who try to take money from him. It shows that only money, rather than justice, gains his interest, so he is unlike normal heroes. Living in a trailer symbolizes how tough his life has been and people can understand why he wants to have the money even though the situation becomes worse and worse. Also, the scene when he ignores the dying person`s favor but takes the bag of money at the beginning of the movie shows his greed. According to Susan Bordo, the writer of “Gentleman or Beast?wn standard and only cares about his own ideas, not anyone else`s. He also commits murder by using an air gun that is connected to an oxygen cylinder. He uses his own style of gun; he does not use normal guns like rifles. The oxygen cylinder usually saves people`s life, but he remodels it for his murder in his own creative way. The gun connected with the oxygen cylinder expresses his complex psychotic personality, too. In the movie, Bell deals with Chigurh’s case and tells his company, “In past 20 years, people have the clear reason why they commit murder, but now I don’t really know why they kill people.” Above of all about psychotic Chigurh’ behavior makes the movie complex, so it let us think about the movie more and more, so this movie is too difficult to understand at once.Bell is a traditional sheriff. In other words, both of his grandfather and father were police officers. He is just a sheriff staying in a small town like in past western movies, but his personality is quite diff movie, Moss` wife shows well as a dutiful wife. She follows her husband, does not argue her opinion against her husband, and just thinks that her husband is right. She is not an independent and leading to do something by herself aggressively. She is just like a delicate girl who always need Moss’s care.According to John G. Cawetti, author of “What Rough Beasts - New Western,” modern western films show major innovation in our perception of the West, but they often include Native Americans only indirectly (563). The movie No Country for Old Men does not depict the fierce resistance and dreamlike landscape the mythology of the west. However, this movie says that the USA is filled with the serious problem of drugs. It is true. Truly, after 1970s, the ex president of United States, Gerald Ford and James Earl Carter, made the interdiction strategy about drug and this strategy was focus on the inflow of marihuana from Mexico to USA. In this time, the problem of drug from Mexico was one of thle feel more tension from the movie.People may also think about what this movie really wants convey to us by Bell`s characteristics. In this film, Bell becomes tired and feels helpless with pursuing Chigurh. It expresses old men in our society. Moreover, people who killed by Chigurh are old men. Moss`s mother-in-law and his wife complain that the country does not have any place for old men. Bell and his friends talk about young men in the country who know only money. The film is totally about western background and time, but it also tells us about the problem of the old people, a recent issue in this society. Normally, traditional western movies don’t deal with the problem about old people because this problem was not the huge issue and trouble at that time. This movie tries to tell us the present issue, old people problem, on the background of western movie. Connecting with past and present is one of the new features that this movie has.No Country for Old Men was the big winner at thent.
