** KimProfessor AdamUS English – MLA Style23 April 2020Does Griselda Represent an Ideal Woman?The Decameron by Boccaccio, a collection of 100 tales completed between 1350 and 1353, is written well ahead of its time as it places at the forefront of its narrative female sexuality which is still considered a taboo topic even in many of today’s societies. The audacity with which female characters in the Decameron displayed their sexual desires and explored their sexuality continues to fascinate female readers across time. As proclaimed in the proem, this text is profeminist in nature intended to vicariously free the female readers from the confines of patriarchal conventions which demanded qualities such as chastity, modesty and loyalty from women. However, ironically, those very aforementioned qualities are embodied by Griselda, the female protagonist in the last story of the Decameron, puzzling many readers as it seems that Boccaccio contradicts himself. It has been questioned for a longthe Bible is perfectly personified in Griselda who addresses her husband as “My honorable and gracious Lord”, patiently adhering to his instructions and enduring his abusive and “injurious speeches” scolding her base birth (Boccaccio 822). Furthermore, Griselda’s suffering has often been interpreted by many scholars as symbolizing Job’s suffering but also occasionally as Christ’s or Mary’s passion or the Christian soul (Vasvári 139). The qualities that make up the ideal woman of the medieval times were undeniably tied to Christian values. Thus, the apparent parallel between Griselda’s suffering and Job’s ordeal has the effect of elevating Griselda to the status of a saint, further adding to the claim that she perfectly approximates to the medieval model of an ideal woman.However, it is possible to argue that Griselda has many flaws which make her look ridiculous and quite far from an ideal woman. Although qualities displayed by Griselda undeniably reflect the qualities venerated in theJob. It should be noted that Job’s suffering was as a result of the game played between Satan and God. As such, Job could be seen as the victim of God’s whim. Likewise, Griselda’s suffering was due to her husband’s caprice. In other words, there is this implied suggestion that both of their sufferings were unnecessary and served no apparent purpose. The outcome of Griselda’s suffering was the regaining of her rightful position as Gualtiero’s wife but she was already his lawful wife from the beginning which makes her suffering seem pointless. Also, the fact that Gualtiero possessed no admirable qualities and that he is no way close to being a moral figure further renders her blind obedience to him ridiculous rather than awe-inspiring. Indeed, in light of the proem where Boccaccio mentions that he wants his female readers to derive “not only pleasure from the entertaining matters therein set forth, but also some useful advice” and use it for “the removal of their affliction” (13), the st the blind obedience with which Griselda silently endures her husband’s caprice and psychological torment has led critics such as Mihoku Suzuki to claim that the story reflects a male fantasy of omnipotence (234). According to the psychodamic theory, human beings harbor sexual desires which our superego represses. Therefore, Griselda’s story strongly suggests “a diagnosis of masochism” to post-Freudian readers (Allen). This repressed sexuality, in modern day society, is often mirrored in pornography where sexualized domination is represented through explicit scenes of rape, bondage, abuse and torture. Just as the rape script frequently featured in modern day pornography reflects suppressed male sexual fantasy, the story of Griselda, a wife who obediently submits to her husband’s tyranny, subtly testifies to male fantasy of omnipotence. In other words, Griselda is the personification of male desire to physically and emotionally dominate women which modern day feminists would scorn. Thusr abusive husband. The reason why Griselda patiently endures her husband’s tyranny without a protest is largely due to the hideously skewed power relation between her and her husband which also serves to illuminate the unequal power dynamics between males and females in medieval society. Indeed, according to the critic Harry Brent, Griselda “is a story about power, here exercised within a marriage, which is an emblem for society” (12). In other words, the male dominance over women in the public sphere in this story translates into the uneven power relation between husband and wife in the private sphere. Thus, the story of Griselda should be seen as an allegory of patriarchy rather than as a tale celebrating wifely patience and humility.To conclude, Griselda would be considered an ideal woman from the medieval perspective as she embodies many of the Christian values; she is remarkable in her loyalty and obedience to her husband, which led many readers, especially male readers to view he156.

The Inextricable Link between Politics and Political WorldBy ** KimUniversiteit UtrechtMay 1st 2020Political anthropology, as a subfield of anthropology, studies politics and power in a broad range of historical, social and cultural settings. Just as anthropology from which it is born, political anthropology is comparative and is characterized by fieldwork-based examinations such as participant observation which is almost exclusive to the field of anthropology. As political anthropology relies heavily on participant observation to generate ethnographies on politics, it is important to account for the fact that the political values and paradigm than an anthropologist adopts have enormous impact on the way the data is produced, perceived, and analyzed. The anthropologists’ values and the paradigms of anthropology are shaped and largely determined by the political climate. In other words, there are constant interactions going on between the political world and the field of political anthrgical orientation known as the processual paradigm. In essence, this novel paradigm emerged in response to the chaos of post- world war II world and with its diachronic framework and focus on conflicts, power and agent-driven processes, it afforded the field of anthropology a new perspective which greatly aided in making sense out of an increasingly complicated and chaotic postcolonial world.It is hard to talk about the development of anthropology without discussing the impact of feminism. Apart from the tumultuous political climate of post-world war II and postcolonial world which gave rise to the new paradigm, feminism has also greatly shaped the world of political anthropology. Women have always made conspicuous contributions in the field of political anthropology. Notable woman anthropologists include Lucy Mair, Paula Brown, Audrey Richards, Christine Gailey, Eleanor Leacock, June Nash and Sherry Ortner. The contributions to political and feminist issues have also been made by womerate politics from anthropology itself as anthropology has roots in colonial history of the late 19th and early 20th century. The origin of this academic discipline can be traced back to the visions of the Enlightenment but according to Kathleen Gough, “(a)nthropology is a child of Western imperialism”(1968). Indeed, anthropology became recognized as a university discipline and a modern social science in the last decades of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries when Western imperialism was at its pinnacle. This was the period in which Western colonial forces made conscious efforts to bring practically the whole pre-industrial non-western world under their political and economic wings. During the early decades of the twentieth-century when functional paradigm dominated the field of anthropology, British social anthropologists ventured to non-western nations to empirically study kinship systems that were incorporated into the British Empire. It is important to note that a largcare, due to the widespread hysteria about communism in the US, many anthropologists avoided citing Marx in their papers. The dire consequences of being associated with communism are best captured in the turbulent career of Kathleen Gough who was overtly left-wing. In 1962, she made a speech at her university condemning the US blockade of Cuba. Immediately after her speech, she was vilified and admonished by the US government and was abruptly notified that her contract at the university would not be renewed. In addition to the unfair termination of her contract, her proposed research on why villagers in south India had become communist supporters did not get funded due to her political stance, leading to her having to conduct the research solely with her own money. As illustrated by Gough’s career, it is evident that criticizing government or even the mention of Marx would seriously compromise the anthropologists’ career and jeopardize the viability of their future research due to the s born. Anthropology has historical roots in the visions of enlightenment and colonial history of Europe, thus it is of paramount importance to not overlook the fact that anthropology, at the beginning, was used for political purposes -namely to serve the colonial interests of the western empire and promote its longevity. Early anthropologists belonged to the dominant race of the time. Thus, they shared the similar values as their colonial government especially regarding their ideas of the superiority of their race. Their values, which were greatly shaped by the political, social and cultural climate of the time, greatly filter through to the world of political anthropology as observed in the invention of the word “customary law”. Also, it is important to acknowledge the fact that anthropologists not only have obligations to the subject matter that they study but also the forces that hire and fund their research.
