당신도 ‘카타리나 블룸’이 될 수 있다‘카타리나 블룸의 잃어버린 명예’ 에서는 언론의 힘이 얼마나 대단하고 무서운 것인가를 극명하게 드러내고 있다. 전반적으로 언론의 폭력에 대하여 기술하고 있는데, 책 제목에서 그대로 시사하고 있듯 이라는 일간지의 자극적인 보도에 의해 카타리나 블룸이라는 무고한 여성의 인권과 명예가 실추당하고, 유린당하는 과정을 그린다. 언론은 있었던 모든 우연들을 과장과 왜곡을 통해 필연으로 만들어 버림으로써 블룸의 삶을 한 순간에 파멸시켜버린다. 뿐만 아니라 원시적인 본능을 자극하고, 흥미본위의 보도를 하기 위하여 그녀에게 흉악범의 내연녀, 공산주의 전력자, 타락한 이혼 여성 등 터부시 되던 온갖 프레임을 씌운다. 병원에 입원해 있던 블룸의 노모마저 충격으로 세상을 떠나고, 그녀는 사회 구성원으로서 사실상 공개처형 된다. 결국 블룸은 자신을 궁지로 몰아넣은 일간지 기자를 총살하는 극단적인 선택을 한 후, 자수를 하게 된다. 언론으로부터 시작한 ‘눈에 보이지 않는 폭력’이 살인, 즉 ‘눈에 보이는 폭력’이라는 결과를 낳은 것이다.블룸에 의해 총살당한 일간지 기자인 퇴트게스는 취재 과정에서도 비윤리적인 방법을 통해 페인트공으로 위장을 하고, 입원해 있는 블룸의 노모를 취재하기 위해 병원에 잠입한다. 여기서, 우리는 카타리나 블룸에 대한 사안이 ‘위장 취재’를 시행 할 만큼 공공 사안에 해당하는 것인지에 대해 생각해 봐야한다. 설령 공공 사안에 해당한다 하더라도 취재 동기가 공익의 목적에서 비롯된 것도 아니며, 의미있고 사려깊은 윤리적 결정과정을 거치지 않고 그저 ‘자극적인 보도’에 눈이 멀어 이와 같은 선택을 한 것으로 판단된다. 이는 결코 정당화 될 수 없으며, 기자의 취재보도윤리에도 위반되는 행위라 할 수 있겠다.황색 저널리즘에 관한 문제는 오래 전부터 제기되어 왔다. 법적으로 언론은 표현의 자유를 보호받는다. 이는 언론으로 하여금 사회 현상에 대한 표현을 장려함으로써 성숙하고 건설적인 민주사회 구현에 많은 힘을 더한다. 하지만, 언론의 자유라는 방패는 일종의 ‘양날의 검’ 이다. 법적인 보호라는 장막 뒤에 숨어 ‘사실관계가 불분명한 스토리’를 가지고 ‘언론의 자유’라는 이름으로 사회에 퍼나르는 순간 변질된 언론, ‘황색 저널리즘’ 이 되어버릴수도 있다. 이러한 매체들은 속된말로 대박을 치기 위하여 사실관계가 증명되지 않은 허구를 사실인 것같이 포장을 하여 해당 사안과 관계된 인물들의 명예를 훼손시키거나 이들에게 금전적인 손해를 끼친다. 그러고 나중에 문제가 생기면 ‘언론의 자유’, ‘표현의 자유’와 같은 상투적이고 또한 자극적인 언어로서 자신들의 행동을 정당시 한다. 이처럼 언론의 자유를 내세우는 언론들은 국민, 시민 혹은 특정 집단 구성원들의 알 권리를 보장하기 위함을 당위성으로 주장한다. 그렇다면 우리는 그들을 통해서 그러한 알 권리를 제대로 행사하고 있는 것일까? 알 권리를 행사하는 과정에서 쏟아지는 정보들을 건강하게 소비하고 있는 것인지 돌이켜 볼 필요가 있다.좀 더 성숙하고 올바른 언론을 만들기 위해 우리가 마련할 수 있는 방안은, 이러한 민주주의들의 적에 대한 법적인 보호를 제거하거나 수정해 나가는 것이라고 생각한다. 하지만 세상의 모든 이치가 다 그렇듯-정의와 부정의의 경계가 불분명하듯이-황색언론과 정상언론의 경계가 모호하기 때문에 현실적인 대안을 세우기엔 어려운 것이 실정이다.나는 언론의 보도에 그저 부화뇌동하는 군중들 또한 황색 저널리즘에 힘을 실어줬다고 보아도 무방하고 생각한다. 실제로, 책에서 무비판적으로 언론의 허위보도를 받아들인 대중들에 의해 블룸은 각종 음란 편지와 전화로 시달리고, 사람들의 무차별적인 비난 때문에 집 밖을 나서는 것 조차 두려워하게 된다. 대형 신문사가 언론 뿐만 아니라 채널권까지 장악해 버린 오늘날의 미디어를 생각하면 황색 저널리즘이 불러올 파장은 책에서의 의 몇 배일지도 모른다. 이제 우리 사회는 더 이상 언론의 자유를 외치는 시대는 지난 것 같다. 오히려 언론의 자유보다는 언론의 책임을 요구해야 할 것이다. 그렇다면 우리가 ‘알 권리’를 제대로 챙길 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까. 매체들이 알아서 언론의 양심에 준하고 자격에 합당한 취재보도와 논평 활동을 하기만을 기대하는 수밖에 없는 것일까? 물론 언론도 변해야겠지만, 대중들도 인식을 가져야 한다. 언론이 얘기하는 것들을 여과없이 받아들여선 안된다. 세상에 100% 진실만이 존재하기는 어렵겠지만, 우선 대중이 조금만이라도 태도를 바꾼다면 진실을 볼 수 있는 가능성이 높아질 것이다.정보 사회에서 우리는 모두가 독자이면서 동시에 생산자이기도 하다. 주어진 텍스트를 받아들일 때에는 이면에 존재하는 다른 가능성에 대해 인지하고, 텍스트를 만들어 낼 때에는 누군가에게 어떤 영향을 미칠지에 대해 생각해봐야 한다. 그것이 최대한의 진실에 가까워지기 위한 최소한의 노력이 아닐까.
5 December 2018AnalysisAccording to Oxford dictionary, the word authority means “The power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.” Given this, the authority usually oppresses the way humans behave, preventing human identity from being realized. If people want to escape from the repressed power, they need to wise up to themselves a bit more. It is important to understand the reality of power that put pressure on them so that they can see whether they have a chance to fight that unfair power and have the will to at least escape from oppression, even if they do not have the power to face it. However, the authority is not only invisible, but also not always come out as direct violence and much more sophisticated than we thought.So, since long time ago, the people like journalists and writers who knew about the reality of the authority that was prevalent in society have used the means of writing frequently to inform it to the public. They could express what they wan Om sokdae, who was a president of the class. He not only received a strong confidence from the class teacher, but also obedience from his classmates. He never hesitates to use negative means for his benefit, so Han resists to him. But the more Han resists, the more Han was excluded from his classmates. It was a symbol of Om’s authority. He tried to protest as much as he could, but not all methods worked. Finally, Han bow to Om’s pressure. As Han began to obey Om, his school life began to work well under the authority of Om. As the year went by, they are in the sixth grade, and class teacher also has changed. Unlike the old class teacher, the new class teacher armed with justice and intellect. The perceptive class teacher punished Om and started to solve the problems. The children, watching the collapse of Om’s authority, begin to confess each of its atrocities. Finally, Om storms out in anger, and soon disappeared from the neighborhood. Even though at a young age, Om could conquer histhat Om sokdae directly assigns Han Pyongt’ ae’s seat. Furthermore, the children's acts of bringing him side dishes and water allude the dictator's form and power at the time. But, Pyongt’ ae refuses to be included in this unfair environment and order. Since then, he stands up against the power of the Om sokdae, but finally he complies with Om due to Om’s continuous persecute. This image of Pyongt’ ae suggests the intellectuals who lived in unity and freedom but were unable to adapt to the dictatorship and opposed to it. This tells us of the situation that opponents of dictatorship lived a miserable and difficult life and some eventually submitted to it. The plot of the story changes dramatically after the appearance of the new class teacher. The new class teacher is young revolutionary and at the end, he is seen as a reformer. This implies that he is the force of the 4.19 revolution. He feels there is something wrong with the atmosphere of the class, which is centered around Om, and se historical fact of the April 19th movement. Also, the book says that of the April 19th movement was happened a few days after the fall of the Om, which seems to make this assumption clearer. The 1980s, when the novel was published, was a transitional term in Korean history. During this time, not only did Korean society move from an industrial society to an information society, but also from a military or authoritarian regime to a democratic transition and the process of regime change were repeated in the political arena. A lot of social movement went through the wringer in the 1980s. Under these circumstances, the author, Yi Mun-yol noted “When the April 13th Constitution was imposed in 1987, many intellectuals were embarrassed, but they adapted to the reality first. This was the subject of the work, and I wanted to show the contradictions of Korean society through it.” Then, why the author portrayed irrationality society in miniature as an elementary school class? He said, “I did sothough it is embarrassing, allow me to explain what was behind the two invalid votes. One of them was undoubtedly Sokdae’s vote, and the other was mine. My vote wasn’t a reaction against the revolution. It wasn’t’ prompted by any wish to cling to Sokdae’s collapsed order, nor was it a question of nostalgia for lost power.” (p.105) This style of narrative allows not only narrator but also us to revisit Han’s past events as adults. At the end of the novel, the narrator seems to be dissatisfied with the power he is experiencing as an adult and missing the power of another power he enjoyed during his childhood under the power of Om. But, the author didn’t do a value-judgement about his attitude. By doing this, the author makes it possible for readers to evaluate Han’s attitude on their own. If the speaker has not taken this attitude and has simply solved the agony of power relations that he experienced when was child as an adult, the scope of the novel will only be interpreted as the end oAT2
