This essay examines the classical canonicity and textuality of Wallace Stevens (Oct. 2, 1879-Aug. 2, 1955) as a major modernist American poet. For this purpose, the aesthetic basis of the major Stevens criticism is explored and a new project of viewing Stevens` canonicity and textuality as the Modernist classics of poetry is established. The canonicity and textuality of Stevens` poetry and his literature are defined as the Western tradition of Humanism from Romanticism to Modernism and to the present critical theories, which is found among major Stevens criticism and critics.
Stevens` canonicity asthe poet of modernist texts in the American literature examines and exposes the cultural basis of a modernist American canonized poet. The Western literary tradition attaches rich adjectives to Stevens romantic, symbolist, idealistic, modern, postmodern, pragmatic, and deconstructive, etc., which ironically show his fluctuating status and
