1. Richard II: A Smashed Mirror for the Renaissance Self-Reflection
My argument in this essay is that Richard II betrays the Renaissance nostalgia and longing for the medieval whole man, and that it portrays the self-reflexive anxiety of the Renaissance men about their own disintegrated selfhood in between divinity and humanity, and in between public self and private, individual self. This thematic stream of self reflection sometimes underlies and sometimes overflows the dramatic texture of the play, as found in the theatrical self-reflection and characterization of the fallen king and the use of images, etc., of the play.
I will discuss this play focusing on its mirror scene with the premise that Richard II is mainly a play about a man and his tragic self-recognition reinforced within the artificially dramatized historical and regal life-frame of rise and fall. Lots of debates have been developed among critics on the nature of Richard II: A pure history play? A tragedy? A historical tragedy?
