1. EQ의 배경EQ란 Emotional Quotient의 줄임말로 감성, 감정, 정서 지능을 말한다. 뉴 햄프셔 대학의 존 메이어 교수와 예일대학의 피터 샐러비 교수가 EI(Emotional Intelligence:감 성지능)라는 말을 학술논문에 사상 처음으로 사용한 때가 1990년이었고, 이 개념에 흥 미를 느낀 뉴욕 타임즈의 과학 담당 기자이자 심리학자였던 다니엘 골먼이 이 개념을 주제로 “Emotional Intelligence"(1995)라는 제목의 단행본 책을 처음으로 출간한 것이 1995년이다.
2. EQ의 개념
심리학자인 피터 샐러비에 의해 공식화된 EQ는 ‘감성이 풍부한 사람’을 의미하는 것만 은 아니다. 자신의 감정을 이해하는 능력, 자신의 감정 절제와 통제 능력, 타인의 감정 에 배려하는 능력을 말한다. 일반적으로 지능(IQ)이 높으면 사물을 적절하고 정확하게 처리하는 능력은 높다고 생각되고 있다. 그러나 지능이 높아도 인간관계를 적절히 해내 지 못하고 본래의 능력마저 충분히 발휘할 수 없는 사람이 많은데, EQ가 높은 사람은 자신의 감정을 파악해서 불안이나 분노, 우울, 비관적인 기분 등의 부정적인 감정을 조 절해 자율적으로 기분, 감정을 분발하게 하는 『정동(情動)의 자기조정 능력』을 보인다. 한층 더 나아가 『대인관계를 능숙하게 발전시키는 능력』 그리고 『자신과 대치하는 다른 사람 마음의 기미를 민감하게 알아채는 능력』이 발달하여 있다. 게다가 자기실현 능력이 나 대인관계 능력이 스스로 높아진다. 당연히 EQ가 높으면 인간관계의 문제에 골치를 썩이는 일도 적어지게 된다. 또 주위 사람으로부터의 원조나 지원(사회적 지원)도 얻기 쉬워진다. 즉, 본래 갖추고 있던 지금까지 몸에 익힌 지성이나 능력을 더욱 충분히 발휘 할 수 있는 인적 환경을 스스로 만들어 낼 수 있는 사람을 가리킨다.
3. EQ의 구성요인들
1) 자각(自覺) 능력: 자신의 감정을 아는 능력
2) 감정 통제력: 자신의 감정을 통제하는 능력으로 특히 분노, 좌절감을 극복하는 능력
