서론
2020년 노벨 생리의학상은 C형 간염 바이러스 를 발견한 하비 올터(Harvey J. Alter) 미국 국립 보건원(NIH) 부소장, 마이클 호턴(Michael Houghton) 캐나다 앨버타대 교수, 찰스 라이스 (Charles M. Rice) 미국 록펠러대 교수에게 수여 되었다. 이 수상자들의 연구로 인해 C형 간염 바 이러스 환자의 분류와 완치가 가능해졌다. 이들의 연구가 있기 전에는 주로 A형 및 B형 감염 바이 러스에 대해 연구가 이루어졌고 그에 따른 성과 를 거두었지만 혈액을 매개로 하는 감염 사례에 대해서는 설명이 되지 않는다는 한계가 존재했다. 이에 C형 간염 바이러스의 발견으로 인해 만성적 인 간염 사례에 대한 원인을 설명할 수 있게 되 었고 이는 C형 간염의 혈액 검사와 신약 개발로 이어졌다.

간질환은 간염 바이러스, 알코올, 지방간 및 각 종 약물 등 여러 원인으로 발생할 수 있지만 가 장 주요한 원인으로 꼽히는 것은 간염 바이러스 이다.
