발달심리학, 그 중에서도 특히 유아 및 아동 발달심리학을 연구함에 있어서 가장 큰 관심사는 인간의 인지적 특징들이 태어날 때부터 타고나는 선천적인 성질인지 아니면 사회문화적으로 교육되는 후천적인 성질인지에 대한 논쟁일 것이다. 기존의 고전적인 이론들은 아동을 성인에 비해 훨씬 미성숙한 존재로 상정하여 인간의 많은 인지적 특징들이 후천적으로 학습되는 것이라고 주장했으나 최근의 연구들은 이와 반대되는 결과를 내놓고 있어 관심을 끌고 있다. 그 중에서도 Hamlin et al. (2007)의 연구결과는 아동이 친사회적 행동을 하는 개체를 반사회적 행동을 하는 개체보다 선호했으며 이러한 아동의 평가에는 사회적 맥락이 고려되었다는 것을 보여주어 아동의 선천적 인지능력에 대한 재평가를 야기했다. 이 글에서 다룰 논문인 Hamlin et al. (2011)은 동일 연구자들의 2007년도 연구를 발전시키고 보완한 연구
