The internet is a sea of information, with its countless websites and its promise to continuously increase. A mere five or six years ago in Korea, the internet was limited in its use by the general public and only accessible to technology experts and scholars. However, some daily newspapers and advertising companies expanded their strategies to include the internet in their communication with the general public. They claimed that using the internet was very useful in helping people learn. This situation caused the recent “internet boom” in Korea. This boom resembled the gold rush which swept over the America in the mid-19th century. Now, people use the internet whenever and wherever they want. The internet may seem perfect; however, perfection cannot be expected in anything. Since it is so widely used, it can cause a problem which is called “the internet syndrome,” or “webaholism.” A scene from the American movie ‘NET’ provides an example of the syndrome. The scene is of one beautiful woman who is the expert of the computer who tries to find a telephone wire in order to use the internet on the beach. What are we thinking about the influence of the internet?
