The word `see` has a CV syllable, the most common syllable type among the languages of the world. This is reffered to as an `open syllable` because it ends with a vowel. And the word `sit` has a CVC syllable, it is also common among the languages of the world.
This is referred to as a `closed syllable` because it ends with a consonant. The word `spit` has a CCVC syllable and begins with the consonant cluster [sp]. A consonant cluster at the beginning of a word is an initial cluster and a consonant cluster at the end of a world is final cluster. It is possible that initial cluster has 3 maximum and final cluster has 4 maximum.
Korean has a different syllable structure. Maximum syllable in Korean is CVC. Both initial and final cluster has 1 maximum.
For example, `밥‘ is CVC syllable structure.
3. Stress
Another important dimension of English pronunciation is stress. In any word, The first vowel is louder than the second; we can hear it more easily than the second. And the first vowel is longer than the second. So, Stress involves making vowels longer and louder. The long, loud vowels that we find in the first syllables of these three words are stressed vowels. And more than 90 percent of all English nouns of two syllables are stressed on the first syllable and more than 60 percent of all English verbs are stressed on the second syllable. Let`s look at some examples.
a. The unhappy customer may insult the manager.
b. That`s an insult.
In (a), the verb `insult` seceives major stress on the second syllable. In (b), the noun `insult` receives major stress on the first syllable.
