The focus of instruction in Second Language Teaching in Korea has changed drastically in the last several decades. Until the sixties, learning grammar, memorizing vocabulary, and being able to translate in the target language were the main purposes of learning a language. The main emphasis of teaching English was on language form; explicit grammar knowledge was the target of teaching, and formal grammar instruction was seen as the key element of learning a language. Learners, under this form-focused Grammar Translation Approach, rarely had chances to use the target language for communicative purposes. However, as learners’ need to be able to actively communicate in the target language increased, the audio-lingual method became predominant . Even though its focus was on enhancing communication skills, language structures were chosen and introduced by teachers, so the emphasis was still not on meaningful input and natural language but remained on grammatically correct structures (Terrell, 1991). For this reason, the results of the method were not as successful as had been expected, so the need for another method which can facilitate learners’ acquiring communicative skills has increased and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has started receiving educators’ major attention. CLT is an approach to teaching a language emphasizing communicating in the target language as the main goal of teaching. Teaching is primarily oriented toward exchanging meaning or messages .
