Patrotism이 요구되는 전쟁속에서 수동적으로 전쟁을 지지하고 반대의 목소리를 내지않고 고분고분. 전쟁의 와중에 길들여진 시민들이라고 봄. 전쟁때는 침묵을 하도록 암암리에 길들여져버림.우리가 그동안 너무나 많은 전쟁에 동의를 했기에 침묵으로부터 벗어날 수없는 것인가 ( 앞이야기와 맞아떨어짐)극단적으로는 Love it or Leave it (조국을 사랑하던지, 싫으면 떠나라)을 뜻함(시민들에게)만약 우리가 목소리를 드높이지 않는다면 남들이 우리의 집을 털어가도록 내버려 두는 꼴이 된다. (그 남들은 결국 우리자신과 다름없다 -> 어떻게 해석할 수 있을까?(lift our voice against wars-> 전쟁을 반대하는 목소리를 드높이지 않는다면 우리집을 다른사람들이 약탈할 것이다. 약탈하게 되면 무슨일이 일어나나요? -> 징병, 징집, 세금을 많이 내게된다. 표현의 자유는 제한 세금을 무턱대고 많이 거둘수없으면 다른 부분에서의 정책비를 감축할수밖에 없는데, 이 경우 제일 만만한것이 교육비감축이다. 그래서 결국, 다른사람들이 (전쟁을 주관하는 사람들이) 우리가 가진것을 빼앗아가는 꼴이 된다. 하지만 우리가 목소리를 드높이지않아서 그런 결과를 자초했다면 그 타인others 는 결국 우리자신일 수도있다는 것이다.How come we've listened to the great criers-Neruda,

( 예술가가 얼굴에 장난을 친 것같다. )brace=straight 몸을 곧게 펴지도 못하고 아주 먼곳에 가서 자기의 색깔을 잃어버렸다.(먼 곳에가서 다치고 피를 많이 흘려서 원래의 얼굴색을 잃어버린 것이다.)포탄구덩이 속에 피를 다 쏟아버리고 나서 동맥이 다 말라버릴때까지. 그 치열한 열띤 전투에서 자기 목숨의 절반을 잃어버렸다. 자줏빛 피가 허벅지에서 콸콸 분출되었다.(이 말은 묘한 뉘앙스를 가지고 있는 말이다. 이 문구는 그 남자의 ejecualtion(사정)을 연상시킨다. 젊은 나이라면 여자와 love-making하는 것도 일상적인 일이 될텐데 그런 것도 할 수도 없고 생명을 창출하는 일을 할 수없이, 빠져나오는 것은 피밖에 없다는 의미.)한 때 다리에 축구시합 중에 든 피멍을 좋아했던 적이 있었다. 어깨에다 짊어 진(큰 활약을 펼친 모양)시합이 끝나고 peg를 마시면서 즐거워하였다. 그래서 그는 전쟁에 참여하는게 낫겠다는 생각이 들었다.(He thought he'd list -> Thomas Hardy's 'the man he killed' 에 나오는 문구를 인용)그는 내가 왜 군대에 입대를 했지? 하고 생각합니다.kilts; 스코틀랜드의 치마.너 kilts 입으면 끝내줄 것 같애(어울리겠는데?)누군가가 이야기를 해서 (심각하지않은 이유) 거기에 현혹된 것이다.그래, 그런것같애. 아마 여자친구Meg가 좋아하겠지.아 변덕스러운 여자아이들을 기쁘게해주기 위해서입대를 했던것 같다 (giddy jilts)(계속이어짐)He asked to join.
