As you know, the miserable Korean war between the north and the south ended in 1953. a civil war that have lasted more than three years have devastated the Korean peninsula and left uncurable would for the both Korean people. The more serious problem is that, after the war, the two koreans in north and south started to have a keen hostility toward each other despite of their ethnic homogeneity.
naturally, the relation between the north and south was constant with tension and hostility from 1950s to 1990s. North korean governments sent numerous mudereres across DMZ in order to assassinate the president of our South Korea. Frequent skirmishes have occurred in DMZ, including the axes murder incident. It is an incident such that the north korean soldiers killed two american soldiers with axes because they have mistakably crossed the border. Due to the aforementioned tension and hostility between two koreas, the both governments increased their expenditure on military in order to secure themselves.
