저널리즘의 맥도날드화(McDonaldization of Journalism)－지하철 ‘무료신문’을 중심으로 (The ‘McDonaldization’ of Journalism; focus on ‘complimentary newspapers distributed in subways’)

초록

이 연구에서는 맥도날드의 성공을 이끈 특성인 효율성(efficiency), 계산가능성(calculability), 예측가능성(predictability), 통제(control) 등 네 가지 요인을 갖고서 국내 지하철 무료신들의 맥도날드화(McDonaldization) 경향에 대하여 살펴보았다. 연구결과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 무료신문들은 효율성의 극대화에 초점을 맞추고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구대상 신문들은 통신사등 뉴스 제공업체와의 제휴와 모(母)신문사 뉴스를 재판매하는 방식을 통해 기사 단위 당 생산비용 절감효과를 도모하고 있었다. 또한 지하철 입구에서 직접 배포 하는 방식을 통해 신문소비속도를 증가시켜 효율성의 극대화를 실현하고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다.
둘째, 무료신문들은 뉴스 제공업체의 기사를 활용하는 정도가 매우 높고, 자사(自社) 기자 생산에 의한 기사도 단순한 형태가 많아 기사 생산 과정이 단순하고 명확한 편이었다. 무료신문들이 계산가능성을 실현해가는 경우라 할 수 있다.
셋째, 무료신들은 신문 패키지화 및 매뉴얼화가 이루어졌다 할 정도로 지면 구성과 내용 논조 면에서 표준화 경향이 뚜렷하여 예측가능성도 높다고 할 수 있다. 예측가능성은 신문 제품과 서비스가 언제 어디서나 동일하다는 것을 통해서만 달성할 수 있는 항목이다.
한편, 통제와 예측가능성은 상호연접성이 강하다 할 수 있다. 통제는 특정의 범위를 넘어서지 못하게 하는 것에서 이루어지는데, 연구대상 신문들의 지면구성과 내용면에서 이러한 경향들을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 독자 피드백의 부재도 일종의 통제요인으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 판단할 수 있다. 피드백이 잦다보면 신문사의 통제력이 그만큼 약화되는 결과를 가져오기 때문이다.
연구대상 무료신문들은, 세계 어디를 가도 같은 제품이 같은 방식으로 공급되는 프랜차이즈 맥도날드처럼 맥페이퍼(McPaper)화 경향을 보여주고 있다. 일종의 맥저널리즘(McJournalism)으로 명명할 수 있는 조건들을 갖추고 있는 셈이다. 이러한 맥저널리즘은 관료제의 합리성이 민주주의의 위기를 초래할 수 있다는 ‘합리성의 불합리성(irrtionality of rationality)’ 논의처럼 저널리즘적 후퇴 경향을 가져올 수도 있다.

영어초록

Thisstudy examined the degree that 'Free newspapers' distributed in domestic subways are becoming similar to Mcdonald’s items (Mcpaper) and their journalistic characteristics through the following four factors that led to McDonald’s success: efficiency, calculability, predictability and control .
In result, it can be derived that Free newspapers appear to have a strong tendency towards ‘McDonaldization’ of journalism.
Such Free newspapers focused on maximization of efficiency. The newspapers examined in this study showed a reduction of production cost per article by affiliating with news suppliers such as news agencies. They also achievedcost efficiency by reselling news from a parent company. Moreover, it was found that direct distribution in subways minimizes the chances of other media outlets of being selected, as well as increases the speed of delivery to the reader, thus leading to maximization of efficiency.
Free newspapers had a high degree of utilization of articles by news providers. They also rana great deal of simple and plain articles produced by their own reporters, thus making the process easy and clear per article. This illustratedthe materialization of calculability of Free newspapers.
Predictability is an item that can be achieved only by the assumption that newspapers and the accompanying services are always identical. It is not an exaggeration to say that Free newspapers are made in a sort of packaged and mechanical manner. For this reason, they had a clear tendency to become standardized in terms of article configuration and tone of content.
It can be said that control and predictability in the newspaper industry are strongly connected. Control is achieved by preventing passage beyond a certain extent. The examined newspapers showed such a tendency in article configuration and contents. It is also assumed that the absence of reader’s feedback serves as a controlling factor. This is because frequent feedback would result in the corresponding amount of weaker control on the part of the newspaper company.
Just as franchised McDonald’s food is identical everywhere in terms of taste and presentation, these Free newspapers exhibit a high degree of homogeneity in terms of editing and contents. It seems to be well argued that they satisfy requirements to be labeled Mc-journalism. It, however, should be noted that such rationality of Mc-journalism in terms of making them available fast and free of charge could trigger journalistic retreat. In other words, further studies on the ‘irrationality of rationality’ in Mc-journalism are necessary.
