기업의 CSR 활동과 이익의 질과의 관계 (The Relationship between CSR Activities and Earnings Quality)

초록

본 연구는 기업의 CSR 활동이 기업가치에 영향을 미치는 변수로 기업의 이익의 질을 사용하여, 기업의 총체적인 CSR 활동이 기업의 이익의 질에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 분석하였다. 즉 기업의 이익의 질의 변화는 기업가치에 영향을 미친다는 선행연구에 기초하여 기업의 지배구조개선을 포함한 CSR 활동이 기업의 이익의 질을 개선시키고 궁극적으로 기업가치에 영향을 미치는 지를 분석해 보고자 한 것이다.
기업의 CSR 활동의 대용변수로 경실련의 경제정의연구소에서 발표하는 KEJI 지수를 사용하고, 기업의 이익의 질의 대용변수로 기업의 이익의 변동성(EPS 변동성)과 기업의 총자산 대비 영업활동으로 인한 유동발생액의 비율인 CA의 변동성을 사용하여 각각의 변수가 KEJI 지수와 어떠한 관계를 보이는 지를 분석 하였다. 그리고 총자산(TA), 부채비율(LEV), 영업위험(RISK) 및 기업의 존속연수(AGE)와 기업의 이익의 질과의 관계도 분석하였다.
분석결과, 기업의 이익의 질의 대용변수를 EPS의 변동성으로 한 경우와 CA의 변동성으로 한 경우 모두 고정효과모형(Fixed effect model) 및 GMM(General method of moment) 모형을 이용한 분석에서 KEJI 지수가 EPS의 변동성(lnEPS vol) 및 CA의 변동성(CA vol)과 (-)의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 기업이 충실히 CSR 활동을 수행하면 EPS의 변동성(lnEPS vol) 및 CA의 변동성(CA vol)이 작아져서, 즉 이익의 질이 개선되어 기업가치가 제고될 수 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이나 통계적으로 유의성을 보이지는 않았다. 한편 총자산(TA)와 기업의 존속연수(AGE)는 EPS의 변동성(lnEPS vol) 및 CA의 변동성(CA vol)과 전반적으로 (+)의 상관관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과 기업의 규모가 크고 기업의 존속연수가 오래된 대기업의 경우 기업의 EPS의 변동성이나 CA의 변동성이 커져서 기업의 이익의 질이 저하된다는 것을 의미하는 것이다. 따라서 우리나라의 대기업의 경우 기업의 CSR 활동을 대외적 홍보나 정부의 직․간접적인 영향력 때문에 비자발적으로 수행하고 있기 때문에 기업의 지배구조개선을 포함하는 총체적 의미의 CSR 활동을 통하여 기업의 이익의 질을 개선하여 기업가치를 제고시키는 진정한 의미의 CSR 활동과는 거리가 있을 수 있다는 개연성을 확인시켜주는 결과라고 할 수 있다. 한편 부채비율(LEV)은 EPS의 변동성(lnEPS vol) 및 CA의 변동성(CA vol)과 유의적인 (-)의 상관관계를 나타냈으며, 영업위험(RISK)은 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

영어초록

This study focuses how CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities effect the continuous growth and financial performance of the companies. Instead of traditional advertising focusing on product benefits, lots of recent studies are drawing attention to CSR activities as corporate promotional tools for enhancing firm value. CSR activities are recognized as necessary methods for building good relationships with stake-holders through the efforts to solve social problems as good social citizens. Although prior researches document the positive association between CSR activities including good corporate governance quality and firm value, no research has been conducted to investigate into their relation theoretically or empirically. In this study, We focus on the reliability of accounting information to explain their relation. Prior studies provide empirical evidence that firms with good corporate governance practices report more reliable accounting information. We examine the relation between the quality of earnings, perceived as the core accounting information and CSR activities in an attempt to provide an explanation for the positive association between CSR activities including good corporate governance and firm value. In order to analyze the relationship between CSR activities and the quality of earnings, the empirical analysis has been done by taking the basis of the 7-year data from 2005 to 2011, which promotes KEJI index of a substitution of CSR activities. The sample firms are selected among the manufacturing firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange. Accounting and financial data are collected from the Fn-data Guide provided by a financial data serving company and cover the period between 2005 and 2011. KEJI index is used as the independent variable of the regression model. This work is conducted on a number of samples selected from 1,200 corporations that possess KEJI Index which is issued by the Korean Economic Justice Institute annually. KEJI Index is composed of 7 main CSR subsection activities. In addition, as suggested by prior research several control variables are included in the independent variables; debt ratio, total assets, operating risk which is the ratio between average assets and (sales receivable + inventories) and company age for the independent variables, while using EPS volatility and current acccruals volatility of a substitution of earnings quality, as the dependent variable.
Through the analysis, the effect of the total CSR activities on EPS volatility and current accruals volatility showed the negative relationship which is not statistically significant. Further, independent variables which have the positive significant effect on EPS volatility and accrual asset volatility are total assets and company age, but debt ratio has the negative significant effect on EPS volatility and accrual asset volatility and operating risk is not statistically significant. This result implies that the better CSR activities, the higher quality of earning; but, corporate governance to increase firm value is not an important factor in explaining the CSR activities of Korean public companies.
In conclusion, the proper CSR activities of companies can be the very useful strategic means which ultimately improves the firm value by strengthening the corporate governance as well as satisfying increasing internal and external demand. To supplement this study, more objective theoretical models that can bring out the relationship between CSR activities and earnings quality and the determinants must be created, and also, further studies that can analyze it empirically are needed.
