구비설화에 나타난 돌봄정서의 아버지 (Fathers with a Care Sentiment in Oral Folk Tales)

초록

본 연구는 구비설화에 내재한 돌봄정서의 아버지 모습을 발견하는 데 목적을 두었다. 신화의 시대에서 현대에 이르기까지 아버지 역할은 사회문화적 변화에 따라 달라지고 있지만 실재 아버지에게서 아버지 지위와 역할을 배우지 못한 채 아버지가 되는 과정을 거친 젊은 아버지들은 실재 아버지를 반면교사 삼을 수밖에 없었으며, ‘아버지의 부재’는 정신분석학뿐만 아니라 문학 연구의 주요한 주제가 되어왔다. 또한 현대사회의 문화현상으로 여겨지고 있다.
본 연구는 우리 문학의 보고인 구비설화에서 돌봄정서를 가진 아버지를 탐색, 세대 간 단절된 아버지상에 대한 완충적 역할을 할 수 있는 돌봄정서를 지닌 아버지상을 얻고자 하며 이는 현대사회에서 요구하는 다양한 아버지상에 대해 근원적이고 근본적 아버지의 정서를 발견할 수 있을 것으로 본다. 구비문학은 가부장적 봉건시대의 산물이라는 면에서 아버지의 권위의식과 가문의식이 두드러진 이야기들이 많으며 여성에 대한 차별적 인식이 뿌리깊게 자리잡은 전승들이 많다. 그런 면에서 구비설화에서 돌봄정서를 가진 아버지 이야기에 대한 탐색은 현대사회에서 아버지 부재에 대한 인식의 변화를 재고할 수 있으며 구비설화의 현대적 전승 가치를 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
구비설화에서 돌봄윤리를 체현하는 아버지에 주목하는 이유는 신자유주의 경제체제 아래서 가족을 기본 돌봄의 단위로 축소하려는 의도, 가족에서 돌봄을 여성에게 전가하려는 의도에서 벗어나 돌봄실천의 방안으로 가족 단위에서 아버지의 역할에 주목하기 때문이다. 또한 돌봄윤리는 모든 인간은 의존을 경험하며 취약한 의존인으로 간주하며, 돌봄은 도덕적 의무이며, 공감, 민감성, 응답성 같은 감정을 유의미한 것으로 고려하기 때문이다. 가정에서 경제적 부양자, 돌봄 제공자로서 아버지의 존재를 규정해 온 것과 달리 아버지 역시 돌봄 대상이며, 아버지에 내재한 돌봄정서를 발견하고자 한다.
본 연구는 돌봄정서와 돌봄실천이라는 측면에서 ‘아버지-자녀’의 관계를 중심에 두고 ‘아버지-딸’의 관계에 해당하는 설화를 추출하였다. ‘아버지-아들’의 서사는 혈연중심의 가부장적 사고가 지배적이기 때문이다. ‘아버지-딸’의 서사에서 <아버지 찾기>, <지혜로 구하기>, <항변하기>의 세 소재는 연민, 보살핌, 욕망의 표현, 웃음이라는 돌봄정서적 특성을 발견할 수 있었다. 자식과의 관계가 드러나지 않는 ‘아버지’에 대한 이야기는 아버지의 이상화와 아버지의 성적 욕망이라는 양가성을 가진 전승이라는 점에서 아버지의 자기돌봄에 필요한 성찰적 사고를 이끌어낼 수 있었다.
구비설화에서 돌봄정서를 가지고 돌봄실천을 하는 아버지의 발견은 현대사회에서 아버지의 정체성 형성에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to discover the aspects of fathers with a care sentiment inherent in oral folk tales. From the ages of myths to the modern times, the roles of a father have varied according to social and cultural changes. Young fathers undergoing a process of becoming a father without learning about the status and roles of a father from their real fathers have no other choices but to get lessons about what not to do from their real fathers. The “absence of father” is an important topic in literature research as well as psychoanalysis, being regarded as one of the cultural phenomena in the modern society.
Oral literature is filled with stories in which the sense of authority and the consciousness of family held by fathers are prominent and transmissions in which discriminating perceptions against women are deep-rooted in that it is a product of the patriarchal feudal age. In this sense, an inquiry into the stories of fathers with the caring sentiment in oral folktales will help to change the perceptions of father’s absence in the modern society and discover the modern transmission value of oral folktales.
This study focuses on fathers embodying the caring ethics in oral folktales because of attention to the roles of fathers in the family unit as a plan of practicing caring to escape from the intention of reducing family into the basic caring unit and passing caring duties in the family onto women under the neo-liberal economic system. In caring ethics, all human being experience dependence and are considered as vulnerable dependents. Caring is a moral duty and considers sympathy, sensitivity, and responsiveness as meaningful emotions. Unlike the old definition of fathers in family as economic supporters and care providers, fathers are also the object of caring. The study intends to discover the caring sentiment in fathers and transmit it.
The study identified tales of “father-daughter” relations with a focus on “father-child” relations in the aspect of the caring sentiment and the practice of caring. The blood-based patriarchal thinking dominates the “father-son” narratives. In “father-daughter” narratives, the characteristics of the caring sentiment including compassion, taking care of, and expression of desire in three materials including “finding the father,” “saving the father with wisdom” and “protesting.” Stories of “fathers” whose relations with their children are not revealed transmit the ambivalent images between ideal fathers and fathers with sexual desire, thus inducing reflective thinking needed for fathers’ self-care.
The discovery of fathers that have the caring sentiment and practice caring in oral folktales will contribute to the formation of father’s identity in the modern society.
