혁신과 기업성과의 관계: 마일즈와 스노우의 전략유형의 조절효과 (The Relationship Innovativeness with Firm Performance: The Moderating Effects of Miles and Snow's Strategic Types)

경쟁 환경의 불확실성과 복잡성이 증가함에 따라 혁신은 기업의 생존과 성장에 있어 핵심적인 목표가 되고 있다. 기업의 혁신 활동을 실질적으로 이끌어내기 위해서는 혁신이 기업의 재무성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여줄 필요가 있다. 그러나 아쉽게도 혁신에 관한 많은 연구들이 있었음에도 혁신성(innovativeness)이 재무성과에 미치는 효과에 관한 실증연구는 생각만큼 많지 않다. 또한 조직의 전략적 지향(strategic orientation)과 혁신활동 간 적합성(fit)에 관한 실증적 분석도 부족했다. 이에 본 연구는 3회(2005, 2007, 2009년)의 사업체패널조사를 활용하여 한국 기업들의 혁신성과 성과와의 관계를 실증 분석하였다. 그리고 기업의 전략유형을 Miles와 Snow의 공격형과 방어형으로 구분하고, 혁신이 성과에 미치는 영향이 전략유형에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지를 검증해 보았다. 분석 결과 혁신성은 기업의 재무성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 방어형 전략보다는 공격형 전략을 취하는 조직에서 더 강한 효과를 보였다. 일반적으로 혁신은 기업의 장기성과와 생존에 관계되는 것으로 여겨진 탓에 혁신이 기업의 단기성과에도 기여할 수 있다는 점은 과소평가되어 왔다. 그러나 본 연구의 결과는 혁신이 단기 재무성과를 향상시키는 데도 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 또한 전략적 지향의 조절효과를 통해 혁신의 효과를 강화하기 위해서는 관리자들이 기업의 전략적 지향에 맞는 혁신활동을 펼치는 것이 중요하다는 시사점 또한 얻을 수 있었다.

영어초록

Along with the widespread of the creative economy discourse, innovation has become the must-do item for firms to survive in the complex economic environment. However, a mere emphasis on the significance of innovation is not enough to encourage firms to seek innovation. It is the evidences of innovation having positive effects on financial performance that leads to the active pursuit of innovation. Despite the bulk of research on innovation, however, there are few studies that focused on the effects of innovation on financial performance. Furthermore, the firm’s strategic orientations must be considered in the research of innovation and financial performance, as innovation tends to yield different results depending on strategic orientations. Therefore this research study examined the relationship between firms’ efforts for innovation and financial performance using panel data. It was investigated whether Korean firms’ efforts for innovation would impact on financial performance. To examine the role of firms’ strategic orientations, we divided firm strategies into ‘prospector’ and ‘defender’ adapting Miles and Snow’s strategic typology and analyzed the moderating effects of strategic types on the relationship between innovation and firm performance. The results of this study showed that innovation was positively related to firms’ effective/efficient financial performance, prospector rather than defender strategies indicating a much stronger relationship with financial performance. Innovation is generally considered as a factor related only to a firm’s' long-term survival and is likely to be neglected as a factor influencing short-term financial performance. The results, however, show that innovation positively relates to a firm’s short-term financial performance. They also suggest that managers have to implement appropriate strategies to maximize the positive effects of innovation.
