초록

This paper discusses the possibility that some of the conflicts that took place during the bipolar cold war period between the USA and USSR are characterized by proxy war phenomena, this being perceived as necessary to avoid mutual destruction, as the development of nuclear weapons was completed by the former in 1945 and the latter in 1949. Particularly, the proxy war phenomena, observed during the 4th Arab-Israeli War, which continued for 19 days from 6 to 24 October 1973, and which was controlled by the open and private approaches between the USA and USSR, were analyzed at the political, strategic and operational level through integration of data such as the ROK army's definition of “proxy war,” existing research literature both domestic and foreign, foreign academic circles' views confirmed through German and French defense attachés to the ROK, and the research report produced by the 4th Arab-Israeli War Research Committee of the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff. As a result, the concept of proxy war has been generalized through the analyses of some conflicts that took place in the cold war period, and has been explained by various elements, including the background, conditions and causes, relevant actors and their behaviors, actors' major objectives, and the progress of the war.
