현행 한국수륙재에 대한 검토 (The review on current Suryukjae(水陸齋) in Korea)

초록

수륙재는 4성과 6범을 초청해 음식을 공양하고 하위의 중생들에게 진리의 말씀을 들려주어 해탈의 세계로 이끌어 주는 종합적인 불교의식이다. 그런데 현재 한국에서 널리 행해지는 수륙재는, 발상지 중국의 그것이나 한국불교 이전의 의문(儀文)과 그것에 대한 인식에는 적지 않은 차이가 존재한다.
수륙재에서 재(齋)는 음식을 굶으며 하는 수행인데, 수행자들에게 음식을 공양하는 의식으로 변형되었다. 그리고 다시 제사(祭祀) 추천(追薦)의식 일체를 지칭하는 의미로 인식되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 재에 대한 근원적 의미와 인식과 이해의 변천을 살피고, 수륙재의문의 형성과 성립을 살핀 후, 결수문(結手文, 撮要)을 한국의 정통성 있는 수륙의문으로 이해하였다.
또 수륙재의 구조, 차서(次序)의 차이(差異) 등을 규명하며, 대령과 시련의 의미를 새롭게 고찰하였고, 수륙재의 일차를 확인하였으며, 대령을 다른 의식보다 먼저 하는 이유를 설명하였다. 그리고 시련의 의미가 현재와 다르게 음식을 공양하는 재자를 모시는 의식이라고 밝혀냈다. 또 상중하위에 대한 음식 공양의 평등과 변공(變供)의 차이를 밝혀내기도 하였다.
한국의 수륙재는 공양을 올리는 재자의 형편에 따라 그 규모가 정해지고, 또 의례 설행상황에 따라 광대로 행하거나 간략하게 행하게 되는데 그 과정에 그 모습이 적지 않게 변화되었다. 그 결과 새롭게 의미가 부여되거나 오인(誤認)되기도 하며 현재에 이르고 있다고 할 수 있다.
그동안 수륙재에 대한 이해는 전문 의례 수용자들의 이해가 최우선의 전거라고 할 수 있을 정도로 깊이 있는 연구는 많지 못했다. 그러므로 수륙재의 바른 이해와 설행을 위해서는, 수륙재의 발생과 구조와 의미에 대한 경전적인 이해 위에 역사적인 전승과정의 변용을 면밀히 검토하고 연구돼야 할 것이다. 그리고 그것을 대승적으로 수용하여 수륙재에 반영돼 설행되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Suryukjae(水陸齋, the offering ritual for land and water) is a comprehensive Buddhist ceremony in which four saints and all beings in six worlds are invited for a feast and inferior sentient beings are given Dharma talk leading to nirvana. But Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) being practiced in Korea nowadays is quite different from that in China where it is originated and the ritual oration used prior to Korean Buddhism and the understanding of it.
Jae(齋, the offering ritual) of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) was to practice meditation fasting but was changed into offering food to meditators. Again, it is regarded as the meaning indicating all commemorative rites for Chucheon(追薦, praying for the repose of one's soul). In this essay, the original meaning of Jae(齋, the offering ritual) and the transit of the perception and understanding of it is considered and the formation and establishment of the offering ritual oration for land and water is examined, and then it is argued that Gyeolsumun (結手文, making mudrās) or Chwalyo(撮要, the selection of the gist) is the orthodox oration of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water).
Also, the structure of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) and the difference of the order of it and so on are investigated, the meaning of Daeryeong(對靈, the rite of calling in the soul) and Siryeon(侍輦, the rite of serving a sedan chair) is renewed, the daily rate of it is identified, and the cause for putting Daeryeong(the rite of calling in the soul) first is explained. In addition, the original meaning of Siryeon(the rite of serving a sedan chair) was to receive lay people who would offer food to the meditators, which is different from that of the present. Besides, the difference of the even and Byeongong(變供, differential offering food) to the three platforms is illuminated.
The scale of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) is arranged depending on the conditions of lay people who offer food and a grand or simple ceremony of it is performed in accordance with the circumstance of the ritual arrangement, which has undergone a great transformation over its history. As the result, it might come to contain a new meaning or misunderstanding up to the present.
Meanwhile, the understanding of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) has not been studied deep into, and so the most reliable authority might be that of the professional performers of the rite. Therefore, for the correct understanding and arrangement of Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water), the transformation process over its history should be researched and examined closely on the basis of the canonical understanding for the origination and structure of the ritual for land and water. And then it should be reflected to arrange Suryukjae(the offering ritual for land and water) by adapting it in the way of Mahayana.
