외국인 지분율과 보수주의 관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Relationship between Foreign Ownership and Conservatism)

초록

외국인지분율이 높을수록 보수주의가 크게 나타날 가능성이 존재한다고 대부분의 선행연구에서 보이고 있다. 하지만 외국인투자자는 투자기업에 대해 기업경영의 감시자로서의 역할을 담당하여 회계이익의 질적 향상을 유도하는 것으로 알려져 있고, 회계이익의 질을 측정하는 지표인 보수주의는 과도하게사용될 경우 기업의 경제적 실상을 왜곡하는 부작용이 있어서 항상 높은 이익의 질과 연관되는지는 명확하지 않고 수익, 비용의 대응이 왜곡되어 이익의 지속성이 감소될 가능성이 있기 때문에 이익의 질을측정하는 척도의 하나인 이익지속성 개념과 상충되는 문제가 생긴다는 선행연구의 결과에 따라 본 연구에서는 Penman and Zhang(2002), Givoly and Hayn(2000), Basu(1997), Feltham and Ohlson과 Zhang (2000)의 측정치 4가지 모두를 사용하여 외국인지분율에 따른 보수주의의 크기를 검증하였다.
특히 본 연구에서는 Ball & Shivakumar(2006)에서 제시된 발생액에 대한 손실인식의 비대칭적 적시성에 초점을 맞춘 piecewise linear accruals model을 사용하여 측정한 보수주의 대용치를 이용하여 외국인지분율과 보수주의의 관계를 좀 더 명확하게 알아보았다.
분석 결과, Penman and Zhang(2002), Givoly and Hayn(2000)의 측정치를 사용한 첫 번째와 두 번째 보수주의 측정치와 외국인지분율간의 관계가 음(－)의 값을 나타냈지만 통계적으로 유의하지 않았고,Feltham and Ohlson과 Zhang(2000)의 측정치를 사용한 세 번째 보수주의 측정치와 외국인지분율간에는 양(＋)으로 유의한 관계를 나타내 외국인지분율이 높을수록 보수주의가 크다는 기존의 연구들과 결과가 일치하였다.
Basu(1997)의 모형을 이용한 결과에서도 외국인지분율에 따른 보수주의가 양(＋)의 값을 보였지만 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 한편 Ball & Shivakumar(2006)의 세 가지 piecewise linear accruals model을 이용하여 외국인지분율과 보수주의의 관계를 살펴본 결과 세 가지 모형 모두에서 외국인지분율에 따른 보수주의가 일관되게 양(＋)으로 유의한 값을 나타내 외국인지분율이 높을수록 보수주의가 크다는 것을 나타냈다.
이처럼 Feltham and Ohlson과 Zhang(2000)의 보수주의 측정치와 Ball & Shivakumar(2006)의 보수주의 측정치가 외국인지분율과 유의하게 양(＋)의 관계가 나와 외국인지분율이 높을수록 보수주의가 크다는 기존의 선행연구 결과와 일치하였다.

영어초록

Most of the previous researches on the relationship between the foreign ownership and the conservatism have shown the existence of the possibility that the foreign ownership may cause a conservatism. Foreign investors, however, have been known as strict supervisors who are able to lead qualitative improvement in gaining on financial earnings for their investing company, and since the conservatism used as an index measuring the quality of the financial earnings may cause the side effects on misinterpreting the financial states of the company when it is used excessively or inappropriate, it is not clear that high earning's quality is related to the conservatism.
Furthermore, according to the previous studies the persistence of earnings, which is one of the measuring indexes for the earnings quality, is contrary to the concept of the conservatism because misunderstanding in coping with the revenue and expenses may cause the possibility of decreasing in the persistence of earnings.
Based on the results of those previous researches, this study tried to verify the magnitude of the conservatism related to the foreign ownership using the four measurements applied by Penman and Zhang(2002), Givoly and Hayn(2000), Basu(1997), and Feltham and Ohlson and Zhang(2000).
Especially, this study examined in detail about the relationship between the foreign ownership and the conservatism using the substitutive measurements for the conservative with Piecewise Linear Accruals Model, which is focused on the asymmetric timeliness of the loss recognition, in dealing with the loss suggested by Ball and Shivakumar(2006).
According to the results, the relationship between the conservatism and the foreign ownership is negative in measurements applied by using Penman and Zhang(2002), Giovoly and Hayn(2000), but that is not significant statistically. The relationship between the conservative and the foreign ownership using the measurements that are used by Feltham and Ohlson and Zhang(2000) has statistically positive, and is consistent with the previous research result of which the conservatism is getting large with increasing of foreign ownership.
The result using the model of Basu(1997) is also positive, but does not have statistical significance. On the other hand, the results using three Piecewise Linear Accruals Models of Ball and Shivakumar(2006) show in consistent of statistical positive in all of three models. These results mean that the conservatism is large with high possession of foreign ownership.
