중세 도교의 자연 개념 고찰 －위진 남북조 시대의 도교경전을 중심으로－ (A Study of the Concept of Ziran(自然, Self-so, Spontaneity) in the Daoist Scriptures of the Middle Ages in China)

초록

본 논문은 위진남북조 시대 경전을 중심으로 도교의 ‘자연(自然)’개념을고찰하고 이를 매개로 당시 도교의 종교사상적 특성을 밝히고자 한다. ‘자연’은 ‘도(道)’개념과 더불어, 유교의 명교(名敎), 불교의 ‘인연(因緣 혹은 緣 起, 因果)’과 대별되는 도교의 홀마크로서 자리 잡았다. 특별히 남제(南齊) 시기 고환(顧歡)의 이하논쟁(夷夏論爭) 이후 본격적으로 도불논쟁의 핵심주제이자 불교의 도교비판의 주요 표적이 되기도 하였다.
위진남북조 시대의 자연개념은 수당을 거치면서 본격적으로 불교적 옷을 입은 그것과 달리 도교 본연의 특성을 잘 반영하고 있으며 위진현학의 자연개념과도 잘 대별된다. 중세 도교의 자연개념은 당시 도교인들이 위진현학이나 불교의 논의를 의식하면서 어떻게 고유한 교학을 성립시키는 지를보여주는 주요한 주제라고 할 수 있다. 본체론과 수행론에서 불교와는 상당한 간극을 보이는 도교가 자신의 종교적 고유성을 확보하면서 동시에 불교의 교리와 수행론이 가지는 탁월한 논리를 수용하여 새롭게 자기화하고자노력이 자연개념의 발전에도 적용되고 있다. 현학과 불교의 영향과 도전은도교의 자연개념에 새로운 함의와 논리적 설명체계를 만들게 한 것으로 보인다. 예컨대 ‘자연도성(自然道性)’ 등의 개념을 발전시키고 불교교의를 차용하여 자연에 대한 설명을 전회시킴으로써 도교 교학 자체를 보충하는 한편 자연의 논의가 가지는 논리적 모순을 극복하고자 시도하였다.
지금까지 ‘자연’이라는 주제는 대부분 선진도가나 위진현학 분야에서 연구되었다. 그러나 도교의 자연개념 역시 동아시아 전통의 자연개념을 형성하는 또 하나의 줄기로서 노장이나 위진현학과는 구분되는 고유한 표현과 이론을 보여준다.
본 논문은 이와 같은 도교 고유의 자연개념의 특성을 파악하는 동시에 자연개념을 모티프로 당시 도교의 사상과 세계관, 수행론의 특성을 파악하고자 한다. 그리고 도교인들이 자연개념을 전개하는 논리적 배후에 불교의비판과 자극이 어떤 역할을 담당했는지를 고찰하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to identify the characteristics of Daoism in medieval China, centering on the concept of ‘Ziran (自然)’, or ‘spontaneity’, which was regarded as the hallmark of Daoism, in contrast to that of Buddhism, i.e., ‘Yinyuan (因緣)’, or the ‘chain of cause and effect’ according to the Chinese literati of that period.
Following the rise of the various interpretations of and theories pertaining to the ‘Ziran’ concept by ‘arcane learning (Xuanxue, 玄學)’ scholars during the Wei and Jin dynasties, the term ‘Ziran’ became more frequently used in many Daoist scriptures. In fact, it was the phrase “Dao (way) models for Ziran(道法 自然)” in Daodejing which spurred numerous arguments among scholars in the middle ages in China.
In the Daoist scriptures of the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, the ‘Ziran’ concept and related theories seemed rather broad given their various applications. The term ‘Ziran’ as used had various meanings to explain the religious doctrines and principles of self-cultivation in Daoism. First, the word ‘Ziran’was used to express the characteristic of Dao as the origin of myriad things but also as the origin of Dao itself. ‘Ziran’also often refers to the attributes and nature of gods(heavenly gods and bodily gods) as deified beings of Dao and to the ‘nature of Dao (道性, Dao-xing)’ shared by all beings from Dao itself to trivial materials such as dust and soil. Occasionally in Daoist scriptures, especially in the Lingbao scriptures, the term ‘Ziran’ was used to describe the nature of the scriptures with supernatural and mysterious origin and power; this explains why expressions such as the ‘celestia lwritings of Ziran(自 然之文)’ and the ‘trigram or patterns of Ziran (自然之圖)’ are easily found in many Daoist scriptures.
The concept of Ziran began to appear as a main topic in Buddho-Daoist disputes and as a target of Buddhist criticism for Daoism while at the same time becoming a hallmark of Daoism. In the process of refuting the Buddhist criticism, Daoists had to supplement their doctrines through more sophisticated and logical explanations of the concept of ‘Ziran’ by borrowing Buddhist expressions and had to overcome the logical contradictions of ‘Ziran’. They also labored to demonstrate the massive salvation power of their religion - superior to that of Buddhism. During the course of the Buddho-Daoist debates on ‘Ziran’, through these efforts the concept appears to have been accepted in the some Buddhist scriptures.
