한국 산업 내·외 ESG 이행 및 성과 차이에 관한 연구 (A study on the Differences in ESG Implementation and Performance within and outside the Korean Industry)

초록

최근 몇 년 동안 갈수록 심각해지는 기후 위기와 코로나19의 확산으로 인해 각 산업의 경영환경 악화와 기업의 지속가능성에 대한 우려는 새로운 변화를 모색하게 하였으며, ESG 경영 추세의 패러다임전환이 빠르게 진행되고 있다. ESG 경영이 기업의 지속가능성 확보와 장기적 성장 전략으로 중요성이 커지고 있으며, 이에 따라 기업 평가 방식이 전통적인 재무적 지표 중심에서 ESG 등의 비재무적 요소를 기업 가치의 중요한 평가 기준으로 점차 전환되고 있다.
본 연구는 한국 상장 기업을 대상으로 산업 내·외 ESG의 이행 및 성과가 산업별로 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지를 규명하고, 이를 통해 기업들이 ESG 경영 도입 및 강화를 위한 실무적 시사점을 도출하는 데 중점을 두었다. 본 연구에서 한국ESG기준원의 ESG평가 데이터를 활용하여, 코스피와 코스닥에 상장사를 한국거래소 KRX 지수산업 분류에 따른 제조업, 금융업, 서비스업, 유통업, 건설업, IT H/W 산업, 운수창고업, IT S/W & SVC 산업이 8개 산업으로 분류하여 총 906개 기업을 대상으로 선정했다. 분석을 위해 가설을 설정하고 비모수통계 기법인 Kruskal-Wallis H 검정을 사용하여 산업 간 및 산업 내 ESG 성과의 차이를 검증했다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다.
산업 간 ESG 성과 분석 결과는 제조업, 금융업, 서비스업, 유통업, 건설업, IT H/W 산업, 운수창고업, IT S/W & SVC 산업의 산업 간 ESG 성과 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 특히, E 영역과 S 영역보다 G 영역의 성과가 가장 높게 나타났다. 산업 내 ESG 성과 분석에서는, 제조업, 금융업, 서비스업, 유통업, 운수창고업은 산업 내의 ESG 성과 유의미한 차이가 나타났으며, 전반적으로 대형주와 중형주가 소형주보다 ESG 성과가 높게 나타났다. 반면, 건설업과 IT H/W 산업에서 산업 내 차이가 나타나지 않았다.
이러한 결과를 바탕으로 기업들이 산업별 특성에 따라 차별화된 ESG 전략을 수립할 것이 필요하다. 산업별의 ESG 성과를 상승시키기 위해 과연 어떻게 해야 하는지, 정부 및 관련 기관은 산업별 맞춤형 정책 설계를 위한 유용한 자료로 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

In recent years, the worsening business environment of each industry and concerns about corporate sustainability due to the increasingly serious climate crisis and the spread of COVID-19 have led to new changes, and the paradigm shift in ESG management trends is rapidly progressing. ESG management is becoming increasingly important as a strategy for securing corporate sustainability and long-term growth, and accordingly, the corporate evaluation method is gradually shifting from traditional financial indicators to non-financial factors such as ESG as an important evaluation criterion for corporate value. This study focused on identifying how the implementation and performance of ESG within and outside the industry differ by industry for Korean listed companies, and deriving practical implications for companies to introduce and strengthen ESG management through this. In this study, using the ESG evaluation data of the Korea ESG Standards Institute, listed companies on KOSPI and KOSDAQ were classified into eight industries according to the KRX index industry classification of manufacturing, finance, service, distribution, construction, IT H/W, transportation and warehouse, and IT S/W & SVC industries, and a total of 906 companies were selected. For the analysis, we set up a hypothesis and used the Kruskal-Wallis H test, a nonparametric statistical technique, to verify the differences in ESG performance between and within industries. The results of the analysis are as follows.
The results of the analysis of ESG performance between industries showed significant differences in ESG performance between the manufacturing, finance, service, distribution, construction, IT H/W, transportation and warehouse, and IT S/W & SVC industries. In particular, the performance of the G area was the highest compared to the E and S areas. In the analysis of ESG performance within industries, manufacturing, finance, service, distribution, and transportation and warehouse industries showed significant differences in ESG performance within industries, and overall, large-cap and mid-cap stocks showed higher ESG performance than small-cap stocks. On the other hand, there were no differences within industries in the construction and IT H/W industries.
Based on these results, companies need to establish differentiated ESG strategies according to the characteristics of each industry. It is expected that the government and related organizations will use this as useful data for designing customized policies for each industry to determine how to improve ESG performance by industry.
