철학상담, 왜 철학하기인가? (Philosophical Counseling, Why is it 'philosophizing'?)

초록

본고는 20여 년의 역사를 지닌 철학상담에 대해 논하고자 한다. 그러나 단순히 그 역사적 의의나 가능성에 대한 논의가 아닌, 철학상담의 훈련 방법에 대한 논의가 주된 목적이다. 현재 철학상담 전문가가 존재하며, 다양한 양성 프로그램들도 존재하기는 하지만 표준화된 훈련 프로그램이라고 불릴 만한 프로그램은 전무하다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 복잡한 사회에서 마음의 병을 앓고 있는 현대인들이 그 문제들을 해결하고, 잘 살고자하는 의지가 강해지는 만큼 철학상담에 대한 요청은 많아질 수밖에 없다. 그러나 그 짧은 역사에 비해 정체성에 대한 주장들은 분분한 반면, 짧은 역사 탓인지 정체성과 방법론에 관한 질문들에 대해서는 여전히 논의 진행 중이라고 답하고 있을 뿐이다. 뿐만 아니라 철학상담 보다 먼저 현대인의 삶의 문제를 해결하고자 나섰던 심리치료(심리상담)와의 관계 또한 제대로 정립되지 않았으며, 이 둘의 관계는 오히려 일종의 영역 다툼이 있는 것처럼 보일 수도 있다는 문제도 있다.
그러나 무엇보다도 우리가 좀 더 관심을 가져야하는 것은 철학상담 관련 교육, 혹은 훈련이다. 개인의 삶의 문제나 마음의 병을 다루어야 하는 철학상담 전문가들이 짧은 훈련 프로그램 참여만으로 전문가가 될 수 있다면 어떠할까? 이를 해명하기 위해 본고에서는 철학상담이 무엇이며, 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 우선은 매우 개괄적으로 살펴보았다. 그 과정에서 철학상담이 자아정체성을 성찰하는 ‘철학하기’와 매우 유사함을 알게 되었고, 철학하기는 철학교육의 한 모습이라고 이해했을 때, 철학교육(철학교육 프로그램)에서 철학상담 교육이나 훈련에 관한 문제의 답을 찾을 수도 있을 것이라고 보았다. 특히 현재 어린이 철학교육이라고 불리는 프로그램으로부터 시작하여 대학생, 일반인들을 대상으로 하는 정규 철학교육의 내용이나 방법이 철학상담의 모범적인 훈련 프로그램이 될 수 있다는 사실이 분명해진다면, 철학교육의 한 가운데 서 있는 우리들은 더 좋은 철학교육 프로그램을 개발하고, 발전시켜야 한다는 의무감이 더 커질 것이라 예상된다.

영어초록

This article discusses philosophical counseling which has 20 years of history. However, the main purpose of this study is not only to discuss the historical significances or other possibilities, but to discuss the training procedure of philosophical counseling. Despite the existence of philosophical counseling experts and diverse training programs, there is no training program that can be considered standardized. As long as people with mind diseases have the will to live better lives by solving their problems, it is obvious that the request of philosophical counseling rises. Despite the short history of philosophical counseling, there are lots of assertions on its identity. However, on the other hand, perhaps from that short history, clear idea of the identity and methodology of philosophical counseling is still on the table. Moreover, its relationship with psychotherapy (counseling), which reached out to the society before philosophical counseling did, is not yet settled. In fact, the relationship between the two may actually be seen as if they are in territorial dispute.
Above all, the part we need to pay more attention to is the education or training of philosophical counseling. What would it be like if the trainees who deal with diseases of human mind or personal problems of individuals are to become an expert with just a short training program? In order to explain this question, this study examined what philosophical counseling is and how it is carried out in general. In the examination process, we discovered that philosophical counseling was very similar to ‘doing philosophy’ which introspects ego-identity, and with the understanding that ‘doing philosophy’ is a part of philosophy education, the answer to the question about the philosophical counseling education and training may be found in the philosophy education programs. If it is assured that programs starting from children’s philosophy education to regular philosophy education for adults and college students are capable of becoming an exemplary training programs for philosophy counseling, as researchers in the center of philosophy education, our roles and responsibility to develop and foster better programs of philosophy education would be greater than ever.
