Normally, filter backwash procedures are divided into 3 steps: firstly, air scouring for tens seconds, followed by simultaneous air-water for several minutes and; finally, water alone for ten to twenty minutes to rinse the filter media. The object of air scouring is to vigorously disturb the filter media to more easily detach the flocs on the filter media. However, the effect of air scouring for disturbing the media does not last the for the entire air scouring period. Immediately prior to backwashing following filtration, the voids in the media are filled with water; so initially, the supplied air has no place to escape in an under drain system. When the air pressure becomes too high due to the weight of the filter media and water, the air escapes from an under drain to the filter, which vigorously disturbs the filter bed and separates flocs attached to the media. However, air succession fails to expand the bed, so the previously passed air develops a path through the media, which can ease to the latter passage of air and water. Therefore, filling the voids with water is necessary to disturb the media, as with the previously mentioned procedure. Supplying water only by interrupting the air supply, the air path will be filled with water, which may allow bed expansion the next time air is supplied. Repeating these steps allows for a more efficient backwash procedure. By modified trough with baffles and slit, carried over media into the trough by air scour and back wash simultaneous procedure could be prevented to loss effectively.
