초록

Many people have a childhood name when they are young. Then,they become to have a legal and administrative name made bycalculating their kinship when listing their names on the family register.
As such, place names are mostly made in native words by originalnatives. Then, upon having to name places for administrative purposes,a legal and administrative name is created through using Chineseletters. There are many cases where one place becomes to have severalbynames for various reasons other than the above. As people maintaintheir childhood name until they become an adult, there are many caseswhere two or more place names co－exist.
This article took the names using ‘mountain’ as a material as thediscussion subject among the traditional place names reflecting theordinary lives of the public. Thus, having multiple place names wasassumed as one characteristic of traditional place names, and thediscussion focused on the reason, motive, and value of the formationof multiple place names.
There are various reasons and motives regarding the formation ofmultiple place names. Largely, we can examine this issue based on apolicy perspective and linguistic perspective. First, from a policyperspective, the revision of place names became an important cause forthe formation of multiple place names. Historically, multiple placenames based on revision of place names appear from place names inancient documents, such as Samguksagi Jiriji. The multiple names forplaces in such documents show the characteristics of applying thegoverning ideology of the controlling class. However, it is difficult toestablish the revision of administrative and artificial place names as anelement of the formation of multiple place names regarding the traditional place name for nature. That is because the multiple placenames for traditional places have been naturally formed during theeveryday lives of the natives.
Thus, the cause of multiple place names of traditional places formedthrough natural realization within the everyday lives of the public canbe inferred from a linguistic perspective. Accordingly, the reason offormation of multiple place names in the phoneme, grammar, andmeaning sectors were considered by specifying into ‘use of Chineseletters for place names originally made in native words, synonymrepetition of place name morphemes, replacement of similar place namemorphemes, different location of namer, diversity of place name origin,elimination of place name morphemes, additions and morphophonemicvariances, similarity of sound images, and complex types.’ These areformation causes pursuant to the inductive analysis regarding theresults. Thus, this implies a possibility of finding more formationcauses in the future.

From the correspondence of such during the past,the problems on using Chinese letters for place names that areoriginally in native words and underlying form and meaning of placename morphemes have been pursued. Furthermore, multiple place namesallow to trace the transitional relationship of place names, and isvaluable in contemplating the relationship between place names andnamers. For instance, multiple place names are not only a valuableresource for studying place names, however, is also valuable as anoutstanding resource to study the culture of the lives of nativescontained in the place names.
