How Does Educational Programs Run by Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) Influence Community Development in Bangladesh?

The aims of this paper are: (1) to explore education programs run by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh and, (2) to analyse how this education program influences on the community development of the country. Improvement in the education sector is one of the vital pre-conditions for sustainable development of any nation. For creating skilled community members, only the government itself cannot play the whole role, especially in an over-populated country like Bangladesh. There are many NGOs that contribute directly and indirectly to the community, working beside the government through their different programs. One of these programs focuses its goals to improve the education level of children of deprived families.
In recent years, Bangladesh has made a significant improvement in the education sector, and has achieved a primary enrolmentrate of over 92 percent, and gender parity at both primary and secondary levels. However, dropout rates are still high (particularly among girls), a lack of universal access to school, and low literacy rates remain a significant impediment to the economic growth. Keeping a big portion of the students out of school, a skilled and developed community is not expectable.
Bangladesh is one of the countries that have signed to achieve the target of Education for All (EFA), and The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), for ensuring the development in the education sector. In this sense, the NGOs (as a parallel force with the government) are working to reach the following targets: universal primary enrolment for all children, universal primary completion, and gender parity in education, and finally, to increase adult literacy in 50 percent by 2015.
