사모펀드의 해운업 투자사례 연구: 에이치라인 해운을 중심으로 (A Study on the Case Study of Private Equity Investment in Shipping Industry: Focusing on H-Line Shipping)

초록

본 연구는 사모투자전문회사(Private Equity Fund, PEF)가 한진해운 전용선 사업을 인수하여 신생 해운사를 빠르게 성장시켜 국내최대 규모의 전용선 전문 선사로 자리매김한 에이치라인 해운을 다루고 있다. 전 세계적으로 대체투자 유행과 저금리 기조가 맞물려비유동성 투자가 늘어나면서 사모펀드의 경제적 비중은 확대되고 있다. 타인자본에 의해 부채비율이 높은 해운 특성상 은행 자본은 소극적이고 사모펀드의 해운 산업 투자 가속화는 다양한 관점에서 바라볼 수 있다. 최근 국제적 전염병 확산으로 인한 물동량 감소로 침체한 해운시장에 활력을 높일 수 있는 사모펀드 투자 확대는 백기사의 역할로 자금 확보 면에선 환영할 일이다. 그러나 펀드 특성상 장기적 측면에선 안정적인 자금 원천이 될 수 없으므로 시장 변화를 감안해야 하고 해운 산업에 대한 전문성 없이 고수익을 추구하는 과잉투자로 위험에 직면할 수 있는 시각도 상존한다. 한국 해운업은 국책은행 중심으로 자본시장 역할을 했으나 그 한계점이 노출되어이제는 금융 시스템 개편을 재고할 필요가 있다. 기본적으로 새로운 구조의 자금들이 유입되어 해운 산업의 혁신과 성장을 도모해야한다. 에이치라인 해운 사례는 사모펀드를 통한 기업 구조조정 방향 제시와 잠재적으로 해운시장을 확대하기 위해선 안정적인 자금 조달 방안을 다각적으로 검토해 보는 측면에서 그 시사점이 있다. 극소수 해운사만 상장된 현 국내 상황에서 궁극적으로는 사모펀드의투자 유입을 통해 산업 경쟁력을 키우고 장기적으론 유가증권 시장에서 주식발행을 통한 자금 활성화 방안들로 중심이 되는 것이 바람직하다.

영어초록

This study deals with H-Line Shipping, a private equity firm (Private Equity Fund, PEF) that acquired the Hanjin Shipping Dedicated Line business and quickly developed a new shipping company to become the nation's largest specialized shipping company.As non-liquidity investments increase due to the trend of alternative investments and low interest rates worldwide, the economic share of private equity funds is expanding. Due to the nature of shipping, which has a high debt-to-debt ratio, the capital of the bank is passive and the private sector's acceleration of investment in the shipping industry can be viewed from various perspectives.The expansion of private equity investments that can boost vitality in the shipping market, which has been stagnant due to the decrease in cargo volume due to the recent spread of the international epidemic, would be welcome in terms of securing funds as a role of the White Knights.However, because of the nature of the fund, it cannot be a stable source of funds in the long-term, so there is a need to take account of market changes and face a risk of over-investment in pursuit of high returns without expertise in the shipping industry.Korea's shipping industry played the role of a capital market centered on state-owned banks, but the limitations have been exposed, and now the financial system needs to be reconsidered.Basically, new structure of funds should be introduced to promote the innovation and growth of the shipping industry.The case of H-line shipping has its implications in terms of suggesting the direction of corporate restructuring through private equity and examining various ways to securely raise funds to potentially expand the shipping market. In the current domestic situation where only a small number of shipping companies are listed, it is desirable to ultimately increase the competitiveness of the industry through the inflow of private equity investments and, in the long term, to activate funds through stock issuance in the securities markets.
