포스트모더니즘의 발흥시기를 1940-50년대로 보지만 전 세계적으로 논의가 활발하게 진행된 것은 1970-80년대로 보고 있다. 모더니즘을 이어받은 징후로 보기도 하고 그것과 구별되는 경향으로 보기도 한다. 따라서 모더니즘을 논한 다음에 포스트모더니즘을 살펴볼 수밖에 없다.
