초록

Deterioration of paper cultural heritage has influence on lots of factors. Many metallic oxides are one of the causes of deteriorations in paper. This study evaluated on effects of paper deterioration by metallic oxides which was used three kinds of metallic compounds; iron (II) gluconate, copper (II) gluconate, aluminum sulfate and three kinds of traditional handmade papers; Hanji (Korean traditional paper) made from paper mulberry fiber, Jukji made from bamboo fiber, Gojeongji made from rice straw fiber mixed with paper mulberry fiber. Each metallic oxide was treated with 0.2% and 0.5% aqueous solutions.
The samples after dry thermal aging measured color change, stereo microscope, polarizing microscope, and SEM observation, SEM-EDS, FT-IR, and pH change. Physical strength properties such as tensile strength, zero-span tensile strength, folding endurance, formation, and fiber bonding strength were measured. Results of color analysis, microscopes and SEM observations, SEM-EDS, FT-IR, and pH analysis, metallic oxides treated on traditional handmade papers were consistent with deterioration characteristics of tensile strength, zero-span tensile strength, folding endurance, formation, and fiber bonding strength. Deterioration stability of Gojeongji was lower than others.
Otherwise, because of the effect of calcium included in the paper, Jukji was considered more stable for deterioration than others.
