초록

Arab films have been the dominant cultural phenonenon among the Arab public during the last several decades. However, a thorough scientific research on the trend and popularity of Arab films have not attracted a great attention. Thus, this paper aims at exploring the characteristics of Arab films in order to understand what the main culture codes are represented in major film products.
This research is based on qualitative culture code approach.
This is because it may enable us to conduct more objective and reliable analysis on various cultural phenomena. This can be said as an attempt to standardize the features of any cultural phenomenon. Through this analysis, cultural contents in major Arab films can be more scientifically measured. This study collected the most popular 20 Arab films between 2009 and 2011 and examined their contents on the framework of 6 categorizations: dignity, dialogue, destiny, collectivity,authoritarianism, and coercion. Through these qualitative analysis, this study would extract how different the Arab cultural codes are from those of the West and Korea.
