영미 교도소 연극 프로그램의 활용 방안 (The Application of the British and American Prison Theatre Programs to the Prisoners in Korea)

초록

교도소는 “감시와 처벌”의 공간이다. 그곳은 결코 낭만적인 곳이 아니며, 교정 현실에 둔감한 사람들이 오해하기 쉬운 것처럼, 안온한 격리공간이 결코 아니다. 교도소는 외부와 단절된 폐쇄 공간이며, 사회의 규범이라는 잣대에 의해 범법자로 분류된 사람들이 모여 있는 곳이다. 현대 대부분의 교도소는 지옥이라고 말할 수는 없지만, 그렇다고 해서 천국은 더 더욱 아니다.
이와 같은 현실에서 재소자를 대상으로 하는 각종 연극 프로그램들이 참여보다는 관람 측에 기울어 있는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 일인지도 모른다. 영미에서 활동하는 교도소 연극 프로그램의 운영자들은 한결같이 연극이 인간의 행동 변화에 긍정적으로 기여할 수 있다고 믿는다. 이들의 생각이 타당하다면, 우리나라에서도 재소자 대상 연극 프로그램들은 검토할만한 가치가 있다. 이런 측면에서 필자는 영미 교도소의 연극 프로그램과 우리나라에서 시도된 재소자 교화 관련 프로그램 등을 분석하여 한국에서의 교정 교화 프로그램으로 연극의 가능성을 타진해 보았다.
한국 교도소에서 연극 프로그램이 성공적으로 정착될 수 있을지는 현재로서는 속단할 수 없다. 하지만 교정관계자들의 인식의 지평이 확대되고, 국가 정책 입안자들의 연극에 대한 이해의 폭이 넓어진다면 연극이 교정과 접목될 수 있는 가능성은 확인할 수 있었다. 현재로서는 영미 교도소와 같은 진보적 프로그램을 기대할 수 없다고 하더라도 시간과 여건의 변화 속에 기여도를 인정받을 날을 희망하는 것으로 결론을 맺었다.

영어초록

Prison is an area of surveillance and punishment. It is not a romantic place, nor a secluded place fit for meditations of hermits as it can be misapprehended by the people ignorant of the general conditions of correctional facilities. Prison is a symbol of enclosure without freedom, of being cut off from the society. The people who are accommodated in prison are classified as violators of the general rules of their society. While perhaps most prisons in this age in Korea can hardly be called a hell, we can never speak of prisons as some sort of heaven.
It seems quite natural that most prison theater programs in England and America are more concerned with prisoners as audiences than as participants, that is, actors. Even with this shortcoming, prison theater providers in England and America firmly believe that their programs can contribute to the positive change of human emotions and behaviors. Yet, until recently only a few prison theater programs were tried in Korea. One of them staged Hamlet at the Yeoju Correctional House on October 10, 2008 by the Korea Shakespeare's Kids. Over 1,000 prisoners (including 40 female prisoners) attended this performance, in which the author took the role of prince Hamlet. Therefore, in this essay the author reflects upon the working conditions for the first English theater performance in Korean prison, as an actor.
This study concludes that the general conditions in Korean prisons are not mature enough to accept British and American prison theater programs as some of them are too liberal in tone and style. Thus, right now it is too early to predict the eventual successful adaptation of British and American theater programs therein. Nevertheless, the author believes that as the correctional officers and the policy makers come to understand the virtues of theater programs, more theater programs would be realized on the prison stages in Korea. As vanguard programs indicating the future of such efforts in Korea, this essay suggests three following avenues for future development: 1) youth theater programs in the juvenile correctional facilities, 2) a national theater workshop for prisoners, and, 3) provisions of youth and adult theater programs in the private prison sector.
