단순 읽기 관점에 따른 지적장애 중학생의 읽기 특성 (Simple View of Reading in Secondary School Students with Intellectual Disabilities)

초록

본 연구는 Gough와 Tunmer(1986)의 "단순 읽기 관점"에 따른 지적장애 중학생의 읽기 특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국의 경도 지적장애 중학생(7학년~9학년) 15명을 실험집단, 읽기 성취도 수준을 일치시킨 1학년 초등학생 15명을 비교집단으로 선정하였다. 지적장애 중학생의 "단순 읽기 관점"에 따른 읽기 특성을 알아보기 위해서 듣기 이해와 단어 재인 검사를 실시하였고, 단어 재인 능력과 음운론적 능력 간의 관계를 알아보기 위해서 음운 인식 검사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지적장애 중학생과 일반 저연령 초등학생의 단어 재인과 듣기 이해 능력을 비교한 결과, 단어 재인 검사에서는 두 집단 간에 차이가 나타나지 않았으나, 듣기 이해 검사에서 지적장애 중학생이 더 낮은 점수를 나타내었다. 둘째, 음운 인식 검사에서 지적장애 중학생이 일반 저연령 초등학생보다 더 낮은 점수를 나타내었다. 셋째, 지적장애 중학생의 음운 인식과 단어 재인 간의 상관은 나타나지 않았다. 이를 통해 한국의 지적장애 중학생들은 학년이 높아짐에 따라 단어 재인 기술은 습득하지만, 듣기 이해 능력과 음운론적 능력의 발달은 제한적임을 알 수 있다. 지적장애 학생의 읽기 능력 진단과 읽기 문제 중재에 관한 함의가 논의되었다.

영어초록

Gough and Tunmer (1986) propose in their "Simple View of Reading (SVR)" model that reading comprehension can be broken down into the products of decoding and linguistic comprehension. Delayed or deviant language development is one of the major characteristics among individuals with intellectual disabilities (Warren & Abbeduto, 1992). Their language problems lead to their reading problems. Recent previous researches studied reading abilities of students with mild intellectual disabilities from the viewpoint of the SVR. Our study is significant in that it explores the efficacy of the SVR model with a particular language, Korean, which has a totally different system from the languages like English or Italian which were explored in some previous studies.
The aims of this study are to explore reading skills in secondary school students with intellectual disabilities from the perspectives of Gough and Tunmer (1986)’s "Simple View of Reading" and to investigate the relationship between phonological awareness and word recognition of students with intellectual disabilities. The subjects of this study include 15 secondary school students with mild intellectual disabilities (7th~9th graders) and 15 typically developed 1st graders whose level of reading comprehension is equivalent to the subjects. Listening comprehension, word recognition, and phonological awareness tests are employed to the subjects.
The results show that the secondary school students with intellectual disabilities (ID) score significantly lower than the typically developed young children in listening comprehension and phonological awareness tests, but not on the word recognition test. And there is no relationship between phonological awareness and word recognition of secondary school students with intellectual disabilities. The results indicate that reading profiles of the students with ID are different from the typically developed children. We presume that the reading instruction for students with ID is focused on repeated instructions rather than phonological instructions. However, phonological awareness is one of the major elements for language development, especially listening comprehension (Cheung, 2007; de Jong & van der Leij, 2002). Thus phonological approach may not be ignored in reading instruction for those with ID.
