“LGBT, 우리가 지금 여기 살고 있다”: 현대 한국의 성적소수자와 공간 (“LGBT, We are Now Living Here”: Sexual Minority and Space in Contemporary Korea)

초록

The identity of sexual minorities is spatial essentially in that itis dependent on certain space. I examines the position that sexualminorities have in Korean society by tracing the process in whichcertain space is converted into ‘queer space' through active agents’performance.
Unlike gay men which have had their spatial area, it has not beenlong before lesbians tried to have their communities. The developmentNGO movement on local community has triggered the demand ofregional movement of sexual minority rights groups. By the experiencein the 2008 general election, lesbian activists became aware of thesignificance of Mapo-gu as a queer town where everyday life waslived.
The reasons why Mapo-gu has become a queer region are asfollows. First, because Mapo was convenient for transportation andnear to downtown, lesbian women who had low income have stayed here. Second, an atmosphere of freedom around Hong-Ik University,so-called ‘the yearning for Hong-Dae,' has been also important forlesbian couples to move into Mapo area. This factor has facilitatedstrong networks among queer residents.
‘Union of Mapo Rainbow Residents(UMRR)’ has launched inthese background. UMRR tried to strengthen a network of queersin Mapo and visualized the existence of queer. Their movement hascalled attention to the symbolism of Mapo as a queer area.
Local movement of sexual minorities in Mapo district is a goodexample in which the identity of sexual minorities becomes visibleby inter-relationship with space.
