Nonresident Fathers Contact with Children in U.S.: Fathers’ Re-Partnering and The Presence and Types of Children in Their New Households

As a large and growing number of children in the U.S. live in a household that does not include their biological father, reducing the potential negative effects of a father’s absence on children’s well-being has become an important issue. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this paper examined the following research questions: (1) whether nonresident fathers’ involvement with children differs by whether a father is in a romantic relationship with a partner other than nonresident child(ren)’s mother (versus being single) and, if so, by the type of relationship he is in (a marriage, a cohabitation, or a dating relationship), and (2) whether nonresident fathers’ involvement with children differs by whether a father’s current household includes any children (versus no children) and, if so, whether these children are biological or step.
Results from fixed effects regressions indicated that fathers saw their nonresident children a great number of days during the past month if they remained single than if they were involved in any type of romantic relationship. The finding was consistent with the study hypothesis that, compared to single fathers, re-partnered fathers would be less involved with their nonresident children. At the same time, however, there were no differences by father relationship status in whether father had contact with their nonresident children during the past two years, nor in the number of days fathers engaged in activities with their nonresident children during the past month, for those who had seen the children more than once in that month. This study also found no associations of the presence of children in fathers’ current households with any of the measures of fathers’ involvement with their nonresident children.
