響山 詩 飜譯의 難解性 (Difficulties in Translation of Hyang San's Poem)

초록

이 글은 일반 논문에서 흔히 다루는 대상인물의 문학이나 학문, 사상, 업적 등에 대한 연구 결과를 발표하기 위하여 쓴 글이 아니다. 또한 한문고전을 어떻게 번역할 것인가에 대한 이론을 주장하기 위해 쓴 글도 아니다. 향산 이만도의 시를 우리말로 번역하는 과정 중에 파악한 향산 시의 특징과 그에 따른 번역상의 어려움 및 번역을 마친 뒤에 발견된 문제점 등에 대해 구체적인 사례를 들어 기술함으로써, 앞으로 한시를 번역하는 사람들이나, 한시 번역에 대한 이론을 세우고자 하는 사람들에게 도움을 주기 위하여 쓴 것이다.
한시를 번역하다보면, 작자가 말하고자 하는 것이 무슨 뜻인지 알지 못하여 고심을 하는 경우가 종종 있다. 무슨 뜻인지 알지 못하는 경우를 보면, 우리가 흔히 말하는 ‘문리(文理)’의 부족으로 인해 뜻을 파악하지 못하는 경우가 가장 많으며, 시에 인용된 ‘고사(故事)’를 알지 못하여 뜻을 파악하지 못하는 경우가 그 다음으로 많다. 이것이 한시 번역에 있어서의 일반적인 어려움이다. 그런데 필자가 향산 시를 번역하면서는 이 두 가지 경우로 인해 겪는 어려움보다는, 향산 시가 가지고 있는 몇 가지의 독특한 특성으로 인해 겪는 어려움이 더 많았다. 이를 사례별로 나누어 말해 보면 다음과 같다.
첫 번째의 어려움은, 향산 시에 나오는 인물에 대해 정확하게 파악할 수 없는 데에서 오는 어려움이다. 향산은 높은 관직에 있으면서 오래도록 조정에서 활동을 한 인물이 아니다. 일제(日帝)에 의해 나라가 망해 가는 데 대한 울분으로 인해, 벼슬을 버리고 시골로 내려가 지내다가 순국(殉國)한 인물이다. 그런 만큼 향산 시에 나오는 인물은 대부분 지방의 미미한 인물들로서, 인명사전이나 인터넷 등의 자료에서 확인할 수 없는 인물들이다. 필자는 번역을 하면서 이러한 인물들을 대상으로 하여 쓴 시, 그 가운데서도 특히 만시(輓詩)를 번역하면서 많은 어려움을 겪었다.
두 번째의 어려움은, 향산 시에 나오는 지명(地名)에 대해서 구체적으로 알 수 없는 데에서 오는 어려움이다. 향산은 일월산(日月山) 주위의 깊은 산골짜기 속을 떠돌아다니며 살다가 일생을 마친 인물이다. 그런 만큼 향산 시에 나오는 지명은 대부분 일월산 자락의 작은 지명들로서, 지명사전이나 인터넷 등을 통하여 확인할 수 없는 것들이다. 향산의 시 가운데에는 이러한 곳에서 주위의 풍경을 구체적으로 읊은 시가 많이 있다. 이런 시들은 그 지역을 직접 답사해 보지 않고서는 정확하게 번역을 하기가 곤란하다. 필자는 이로 인해 다른 어느 문집의 시를 번역하는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 어려움을 겪어야만 했다.
세 번째의 어려움은, 향산의 시에 인용된 우리나라의 고사(故事)에 대해 잘 모르는 데에서 오는 어려움이다. 한시에서는 중국의 고사를 끌어다가 쓰는 경우가 대부분이며, 우리나라의 고사를 끌어다가 쓰는 경우는 그리 많지 않다. 번역을 함에 있어서는 중국 고사를 끌어다가 쓴 것보다 우리나라 고사를 끌어다가 쓴 경우가 훨씬 더 어렵다. 왜냐하면 우리나라 고사의 경우에는 우선 사전(辭典) 형태로 정리된 공구서(工具書)가 없으며, 어떤 고사에 대해 일정한 용어로 정리되어 있지 않은 탓에 인터넷 등을 통해 검색하기가 곤란해서이다. 향산의 시 가운데에는 우리나라의 고사를 인용한 경우가 곳곳에 있어, 번역을 함에 있어서 큰 어려움을 겪는 경우가 종종 있었다.
필자는 향산 시를 번역하면서 현지답사를 하는 등 시의 내용을 정확하게 파악하기 위해 나름대로의 노력을 기울였다. 그러나 번역을 마치고 난 뒤에 검토해 본 결과, 크게 두 가지의 문제점이 있었다.
첫 번째 문제점은, 시의 내용을 정확하게 파악하지 못한 데 따른 오역(誤譯)이 있는 것이다. 번역에 있어서의 오역은 번역하는 사람의 입장에서 보면 숙명과도 같은 것이다. 그러나 번역을 하는 과정 중에 조금만 더 주의를 기울이면, 정확하게 번역할 수 있었던 것도 종종 발견된다. 그런즉 본 번역에서의 오역은 전적으로 필자의 책임인 것이다.
두 번째 문제점은, 다른 번역서에 비해 미상주석(未詳註釋)이 지나치게 많다는 점이다. 대개 고전번역의 문제점을 거론함에 있어서는 대부분 학술적이지 못한 주석, 소략한 주석 등이 문제점으로 거론된다. 본 향산 시 번역의 주석에 있어서도 이런 문제점이 곳곳에서 드러난다. 그러나 그보다 더 큰 문제점은, 다른 번역서에 비해 미상주석이 지나치게 많다는 데 있다. 이는 향산 시가 가지고 있는 특징으로 인한 부득이한 면이 있기도 하지만, 이 역시 필자의 게으름으로 인한 것이 대부분이다.
필자가 한 향산 시의 번역은 위에서 말한 바와 같은 문제점을 가지고 있는 미완성의 번역이다. 향산의 시 번역이 필자의 이 번역으로 완전히 끝난 것은 아니다. 앞으로 향산에 대한 관심이 확대되면, 『향산집(響山集)』의 재번역은 물론, 더 나아가 『향산전서(響山全書)』의 완역도 요구될 것이다. 그 때에는 본 번역에서의 오류가 바로잡힌, 보다 충실한 번역이 이루어질 수 있을 것이다.

This writing is not for presenting a person's study, idea, achievement, or etc, which is usually used in a general thesis. Moreover, it is not for arguing a theory regarding how the Chinese classic should be translated. It has been written for assisting people, who translate the Chinese poem or theorize its translation, through describing by using specific examples of the characteristics of Hyang San(響山)'s - Lee, Man do(李晩燾)'s poem discovered by the writer during its translation to Korean, the accompanied difficulties, and problems that have been found after the translation.
For the Chinese poem translation, it requires thorough consideration to figure out the writer's intention sometimes. When looking into such cases without understanding the poem, most cases are caused by lack of 'Context(文理)' to use a common phrase and lack of understanding of cited 'Historical events(故事)' in most other cases. These are general difficulties of Chinese poem translation. However, from the writer's translation of Hyang San' s poem, there are several specific characteristics of Hyang San's poem that were raised and were more difficult rather than those two cases mentioned above. The following are explanations of those cases provided with examples.
The first difficulty was the inability to understand exactly the characters within Hyang San's poem. Hyang San was not the character who had worked for the government for a long time in a high-ranking post. The character had sacrificed himself for his country while staying in the countryside after leaving the government post due to the perishing country by the Japanese Empire. For that reason, the characters within Hyang San's poem are insignificant characters from the countryside who can not be verified from the biographical dictionary or internet data. The writer had much difficulty in interpreting such poetries with these characters, in particular, the translation of "Man Poetry(輓詩)".
The second difficulty was on the names of the places within Hyang San's poem which can not be concretely known. Hyang San was a character who had finished his life while wandering secluded valleys around Il-Wall Mountain(日月山). For that reason, the places mentioned in Hyang San's poem are very tiny within the Il-Wall Mountain area which can not be verified from the geographical dictionary or internet data. There are many poems among Hyang San's poems which concretely recite the surrounding scenery during his stay in such places. These poems are very tough to be exactly translated without a direct field exploration. Because of this reason, the writer had much more difficulty working on this poem than any other translations of anthologies.
The third difficulty was an uncertainty of Korean historical events which have been cited within Hyang San's poem. The Chinese poem is usually involved with Chinese historical events, and it is quite unusual to be involved with the Korean historical events. For translation, it is more difficult to translate such a poem involving the Korean historical events than the Chinese. This is because there is no such reference book arranged in dictionary form; moreover, it is hard to search the internet due to unarranged search results by the fixed term on the certain historical event. The citation of the Korean historical events exist all over Hyang San's poems, therefore, it causes difficulty of the translation sometimes.
The writer has made the best possible effort such as field exploration for exact understanding on the contents of the poems while translating Hyang San's poem. However, there were two major problems raised after reviewing the completed translation.
The first problem was on the mistranslation due to lack of an exact understanding on the content of the poem. The mistranslation within the translation process means that translators can not avoid mistranslating somewhat. However, several errors which could be correctly translated if the translator had paid more careful attention during the translation are sometimes discovered. Therefore, the mistranslation on this translation is completely the writer's responsibility.
The second problem was that too many inappropriate annotations were found in the translations compared to other translations. When talking about problems in classical translation, problems such as un-academic annotation, rough annotation, etc. are usually pointed out. Many similar problems are revealed when translating the annotation of Hyang San's poem. However, the bigger problem was too many unknown annotations comparing other translations. It is unavoidable due to the special characteristics of Hyang San's poem; however, it is mostly because of the translator's laziness.
The writer's translation of Hyang San's poem is still an uncompleted translation including such problems as above. The translation of Hyang San's poem is not fully completed by the writer's translation. If the interest toward Hyang San becomes broader in the future, not only retranslation of the "Collections of Hyang San(響山集)", but also complete translation of the "Collected Works of Hyang San’s(響山全集)" will be in demand. At that time, a more faithful translation should be completed with the error corrections from this translation.
