산업 특성에 따른 연구개발비 지출과 기업성과의 관계 (The Effect of Industry Characteristics on the Relation between R&D Expenditure and Firm Performance)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 산업 특성에 따라 연구개발비 지출과 기업성과의 관계가 어떻게 나타나는가를 분석하는데 있다. 연구개발비 지출은 비배제성이라는 특징을 갖는데, 이는 연구개발을 실시한기업의 성과를 다른 기업이 이용할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 연구개발을 실시한 기업뿐만 아니라산업 내에 속한 다른 기업이 연구개발의 성과를 누릴 수 있다는 점은 연구개발을 실시한 기업이속한 산업의 특성이 연구개발비 지출과 성과의 관계를 결정하는 중요한 요인이 될 수 있음을 의미한다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 연구개발비 지출과 관련한 선행연구의 논의를 확장하여 산업규모와 산업 성장률에 따라 연구개발비와 기업성과의 관계가 어떻게 나타나는가를 살펴본다.
연구 결과, 산업규모를 기준으로 집단을 구분하는 경우 규모가 작은 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비 지출은 나머지 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비 지출에 비해 기업가치, 이익성장성, 이익지속성을 상대적으로 더욱 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 산업성장률을 기준으로 집단을 구분하는 경우, 고성장 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비 지출은 그 외의 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비지출에 비해 기업성과의 대용치 중 기업가치와 이익지속성을 더욱 향상시키는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타난 반면 이익성장성에는 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치지 아니하였다. 이러한 현상은 고성장 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비는 이익성장을 도모하기보다 산업 내 경쟁 포지션 하에서 현재의 이익을 유지하기 위하여 투입되는 재원의 성격이 강하다는 것을 시사한다.
본 연구의 공헌점은, 선행연구의 논의를 확장하여 연구개발비 지출과 기업성과의 관계에 대한조절변수로서의 산업 특성의 역할을 조명하였다는데 있다. 또한 본 연구에서 보고한 현재의 산업규모가 작더라도 기업의 연구개발비 지출에 대한 기업성과는 다른 산업에 비해 높게 나타나는 현상, 고성장 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발비 지출이 이익성장보다는 이익지속성을 향상시키는 현상은 정책당국과 투자자에게 유용한 정보가 될 것이라 예상한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to test whether industry characteristics increase the relation between R&D expenditure (hereafter, R&D) and firm performance. One of the characteristic often attributed to R&D is non-excludability. That is, if company finishes R&D project which is successful, it is impossible for the company to prevent other players within the industry from gaining access to the output of R&D project. Therefore, studying industry is important to examine the relation between R&D and firm performance.
But, much prior work has been done on the topics of firm-specific characteristics and performance. Within a firm, one aspect of R&D is exploring and pioneering investment which makes long-term value of the firm, and the other is enhancing the technological capabilities to appropriate the benefits from the finished R&D projects. Those studies emphasize on the relation between R&D and firm value, determinants of R&D, and R&D capitalization policy problems.
Although R&D is similar to the public goods within and between industries, relatively few studies have been devoted to detailed examination of industry characteristics which influence on the relation between R&D and firm performance. Furthermore, R&D expenditure is far from uniform across all industries. For example, size of industry (or product market) is a considerable factor for companies who are deciding whether to enter a specific market, to expand, or to exit current business. If current industry size of company is small, however, potential (or predicted) market size is bigger than current market size. If this is the case, the company is going to increase R&D activity and its relevant investments in order to meet the future demand of the market.
Our findings are as follows. First, we find R&D of firms assigned to the relatively small-sized industries performs better than other industries. That is, the relations between R&D and three performance proxies (firm value, earnings growth, and earnings persistence) are the strongest in the lowest industry-size quartile. Second, we find R&D of firms assigned to the relatively high-growth industries performs the best. In other words, in the highest industry-growth quartile, the relations between R&D and two performance proxies (firm value and earnings persistence) are stronger than other quartiles. However, we cannot find the significant difference of earnings growth between high-growth industries and other industries. These findings suggest that, firms within the growing industry have propensity to invest R&D in order to make future earnings maintain status quo rather than to boost them.
We contribute to the literature in several ways. We extend the prior studies by emphasizing the moderating role of industry size and growth rate on the relation between R&D and firm performance. Also, we show R&D performances of firms within relatively small industry are greater than the benchmark group, suggests that, it is reasonable for the government to support and encourage R&D of small industries. Policymakers and investors such as venture capitalists may refer to the arguments of this paper. Furthermore, our result provides a useful ground to test whether and how industry characteristics determine the effect of R&D on firm performance.
