신라 중대의 정불국토(淨佛國土) 인식과 의미 (An Understanding of the ‘Purify the Buddha-land (淨佛國土)’ of the Middle Silla Period and its Significance)

초록

이 글은 신라 중대 승려들의 논서에서 ‘정불국토(淨佛國土)’에 대한 인식을 살펴보고, 이를 신라 불국토사상의 맥락 속에서 그 의미를 해석해본 것이다. 유식학적 정토관을 지닌 법위(法位), 의적(義寂), 현일(玄一), 경흥(憬興)의 『무량수경』 및 『미륵경』주석서를 분석대상으로 하였다.
법위는 여래는 무분별지(無分別智)․후득지(後得智)의 무루종자(無漏種子)를 정토의 인(因)으로 삼고, 보살은 문혜(聞惠)․사혜(思惠)․수혜(修惠)를 일으켜야 정토에들어갈 수 있다고 하였다. 현일은 법장이 5겁 동안 수행하여 초지(初地)에 올라 마음이 깨끗해지면 불토(佛土)도 저절로 깨끗해진다고 하였다. 마음이 깨끗해지고 평등해진다는 것은 바로 분별심이 없는 상태를 가리킨다고 한다. 경흥은 선정(定)을 근본으로 삼고 지혜(慧)가 선정을 이끄는 심관(心觀)이 정토의 업이라고 하여, 이를 통한 청정국토의 성취를 강조하였다. 수행을 통해 국토를 청정하게 할 수 있다는 것이다.
삼국 통일을 이룩하고 새로운 사회를 만들어나가던 시기에 법위, 현일, 경흥 등의 신라 승려들은 모두 수행을 통해 마음을 청정하게 하는 것이 불국토, 정토를 이루는 길임을 말하였다.
신라의 불국토 인식은 중고기로 끝난 것이 아니고 통일 이후 불교 교학에 대한 이해가 진전하면서 더 강화되어 나갔다고 볼 수 있다. 과거 부처와 인연이 있는 나라라는 의미에서의 불국토가 아니라 수행에 의해 청정해진 불국토를 꿈꾸었을 것이다.
현재의 신라 땅에 아미타불 및 여러 불보살(佛菩薩)이 상주한다는 이야기나 현신성불(現身成佛)의 사례들, 불국토의 구현이라 평가받는 경주 남산의 모습은 중대초 정불국토(淨佛國土)를 강조하던 여러 승려들의 가르침에 힘입은 바가 크다고 생각한다.

영어초록

This paper reviewed the middle Silla period monks' understanding of ‘Purifythe Buddha-land (淨佛國土)’ based on Buddhist texts of the period and interpretedits significance from the perspective of understanding Silla Pureland Buddhism.
The targets of the review are the commentaries of the Sukhāvatī-vyūha (無量壽經) written by Beobwi (法位), Hyeon-il (玄一). and Gyeongheung (憬興) whoemphasized the Pureland Buddhism based on Yogācāra Buddhism.
Beobwi (法位) insisted that the untainted seeds of the non-discriminatingwisdom and subsequently attained wisdom are the cause of pure-land to tathāgata(如來). On the other hand, Bodhisattva can enter the pure-land after cultivatingthe three kind of wisdom i.e. the wisdom gained by listening to expositions of theDharma (聞慧), the wisdom gained by contemplating the truth (思慧). and thewisdom gained by the cultivation of meditation (修慧). Hyeon-il explained that, ifDharmâkara Bodhisattva arrives the first of the ten bodhisattva bhūmis (stage orground) after practicing meditation for five eons, the Buddha-land will becomeautomatically pure. This state of equal and pure mind points to the mind ofnon-discrimination. Gyeongheung emphasized the meditative concentration (禪定dhyāna) as fundamental basis that achieve the pure land and he defined thecontemplation of the mind which leads the meditative concentration is the karmaof pure-land. He explained that only though this practice, we can purify our land.
All three Silla monks, Beobwi, Hyeon-il. and Gyeongheung insist that purifyingthe mind through practice is the only way to achieve Buddha-land when the newsociety was being made after the unification of the Three Kingdoms. The Silla's understanding of the Pure Buddha-land did not finished after the middle-ancientperiod (中古期) but continued, rather strengthened it depth after the unification ofthe Three Kingdoms as the understanding of Buddhist studies progressed. ToSilla people, Buddha-land was not understood in terms of the past Buddha or thecausal relationship but Silla people dreamed the Buddha-land that is cleaned andpurified through practices. The idea and stories of presence of Amitâbha Buddhaand many buddhas and bodhisattvas along with Mt. Nam-san being considered asthe realization of Buddha-land were deeply inspired by the teaching of manyscholar monks who emphasized ‘Purify the Buddha-land’ from around the later7th century to the first 8th century in Silla land.
