신라 적석목곽분의 축조기법과 전개 (The Construction Technique and Development of Silla Wooden Chamber Tombs with Stone Mounds)

초록

신라 전기 고분문화의 핵심적인 존재인 경주 월성북고분군의 적석목곽분은 매장주체부인 목곽, 목곽의 주위 사방과 뚜껑 위로 냇돌을 쌓아올린 적석부, 그 위에 흙으로 쌓은 圓形의 高大 봉토와 봉토 가장자리에 돌을 쌓아 두른 호석을 기본구조로 한다. 적석목곽분은 목곽이 부식되고 적석부는 함몰하여, 고분의 내부구조가 변형된 상태로 조사되므로, 그 내부구조를 이해하기 위해서는 먼저 ‘사실’의 확인이 중요하다. 그러나 이를 소홀히 하고 연구자 개인의 주관적 판단에 의존하면, 그 연구 결과는 합리적 추론의 범위를 벗어나버리고 만다.
신라 전기 월성북고분군에서는 두 유형의 적석목곽분, 즉 지상적석식과 상부적석식의 적석목곽분이 조영되었다. 매장주체부를 중심으로 지상적석식은 무묘광 지상주체식, 상부적석식은 묘광 주체식이라고 할 수 있다. 두 유형의 적석목곽분은 묘곽의 형식 등 기본적으로 신라 조기 석재충전목곽묘의 구조를 계승한 것으로 보이지만, 상부적석식은 그 계승성이 현저한 반면 지상적석식은 차이점이 많으며, 지상적석식과 상부적석식 사이에도 구조적 상이성이 상당하다. 따라서 상부적석식에서 지상적석식으로 발전한 것이 아니라 양자는 시종 공존되었을 가능성이 크다.
한편, 월성북고분군의 초대형 적석목곽분 중에 존재하는 신라 마립간시기 왕릉들의 비정에 대해서는 견해가 상반된다. 대개 신라고분에 대한 연대관의 차이 때문이다. 그러나 왕릉의 비정은 특정 고분의 연대관이 아니라 고분들의 상대편년, 그에 의한 월성북고분군의 조영 방향, 그리고 왕릉 배치의 기획성에 부합해야 한다.

영어초록

The basic structure of the wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds of the Wolseong North Burial Ground, located in Gyeongju, which are a central feature of the Early Silla Tomb culture, consists of the following: a wooden burial chamber; a stone cairn feature, made of river stones, that surrounds the top and sides of the wooden burial chamber; a large, high and round earthen mound that covers the stone cairn feature; and a row of protective stones established along the perimeter of the earthen mound. This basic structure, in its original state, cannot be observed during the investigation of these tombs, since the wooden chamber deteriorates over time and the stone cairn feature collapses inwards as a result. As such, the identification of ‘facts’ is a key element of the investigation of these tombs, based on which an understanding of their internal structure can be achieved. When such an establishment of facts is ignored and the archaeologist’s subjective judgement takes over, the results of the archaeological research inevitably go beyond the boundaries of rational inference.
In the Early Silla phase, two subtypes of wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds were constructed at the Wolseong North Burial Ground; the subtype that features a burial chamber located above ground and the subtype with a subterranean burial chamber. Both subtypes feature a similar wooden chamber structure and therefore are believed to have emerged from the wooden chamber tomb embellished with packed stones of the Incipient Silla phase. The connection with this prototype can clearly be seen in the case of the subtype with a subterranean burial chamber. However, there also exists considerable structural differences between the subtype featuring a burial chamber located above ground and the subtype with a subterranean burial chamber. It is likely that the two subtypes coexisted.
There is considerable debate surrounding the interpretation (i.e. the identity of the deceased) of some of the largest tombs located in the Wolseong North Burial Ground, which are generally accepted to be Royal Tombs of the Maripgan Period. This is due to the difference in opinion concerning the dating of the Silla tombs. The identification of the deceased’s identity in the case of the Royal Tombs, however, is based not on the absolute date per se of a given tomb but rather on its relative position in the sequence of the constructed tombs. The interpretation of the deceased’s identity must therefore be in accordance with the trajectory of expansion observed at the Wolseong North Burial Ground, and must also demonstrate the probable choices associated with the planning of a Royal Tomb.
