중국 인터넷 토론 공간에서의 북한 및 북핵 문제 인식 (North Korea and the North Korean Nuclear Issue as Reflected in the Chinese On-line Debate Forum)

초록

1994년 중국이 정식으로 인터넷 시스템에 편입된 이래 인터넷 토론 공간은 사회적 의제들에 대해 다양한 의견을 표출하고 논의를 조직하는 공간으로 발전해왔다. 북한 및 북핵 문제 역시 중국의 인터넷 토론 공간에서 뜨거운 이슈 가운데 하나다. 대표적인 인터넷 토론 공간인 텐야(天涯, tianya.cn), 몹(猫扑, mop.com), 우여우즈샹(烏有之鄕, wyzxwk.com)에서 진행된 북한 관련 토론은 각 사이트의 성격과 주 이용자층의 차이에 따른 특성을 보여준다.
고학력 이용자가 많은 텐야의 토론은 북한 및 북핵 문제에 대한 현실주의적 접근 양상을 보여주며, 일부 사례에서는 중미관계, 동아시아 지역 현안 등에 대한 심도와 전문성이 드러난다. 엔터테인먼트 포탈을 표방하는 몹에서의 토론은 북한문제에 대한 젊은 세대 특유의 흥미 중심적·탈이념적 접근 태도를 보여주며 대체로 부정적인 북한관을 드러내고 있다. 그러나 일부 이용자들의 북한 여행기 등 직접 체험을 통해 북한의 다양한 면모를 소개함으로써 편향된 북한 인식을 바로잡으려는 노력도 동시에 발견된다. 마오주의 좌파를 정체성으로 내세우는 우여우즈샹의 관련 논의는 북한을 중국이 잃어버린 사회주의적 과거를 투영하여 이상화하는 경향을 보여준다.
이상의 사례들의 검토를 통해 중국 인터넷 토론 공간에서의 북한 및 북핵 문제에 관한 인식의 스펙트럼과 내부적 논의양상을 살필 수 있다. 이는 우리가 관련 문제에 대해 중국과 논의하는 데 공개된 것, 공식적인 것의 이면에 존재하는 비공식적이고 잠재적인 입장에 관해서도 유의하고 대응해야 할 필요를 시사한다.

영어초록

Since the official incorporation of China into the internet system in 1994, the internet has evolved as both an outlet and an organizational medium for differing views on a variety of social agendas. Within this space today, North Korea and the North Korean Nuclear issue represent a particularly hot topic. Discussions conducted on representative community sites such as Tianya, Mop, Wuyouzhixiang reveal key differences that reflect the primary orientations of these sites as well as demographic characteristics of the user communities.
In the case of Tianya, whose major user group consists of the highly educated, discussions about North Korea and the North Korean nuclear problem demonstrate a practical approach, with several examples revealing analytical depth and a degree of expertise regarding Sino-American relations and East Asian current affairs. Mop, which markets itself as a portal for entertainment-related news, features discussion threads that show post-ideological attitudes characteristic of the younger generation and negative views toward North Korea in general. Travel accounts and other personal experiences expressed by individual users, however, introduce diversity into the negative characterizations of North Korea, thereby functioning to correct the overall bias. Wuyouzhixiang, identified heavily with the Maoist Left, demonstrates a tendency to idealize North Korea by projecting onto its society the lost socialist past of China.
Charting the discussions across these three internet communities, we can understand the range and variety of the internal Chinese debates about North Korea and the North Korean nuclear issue. The examination further reinforces the importance of paying adequate attention to unofficial and latent perspectives that animate the popular discursive space below the exposed plane of policy and diplomacy in our discussions with China on the subject of North Korea and the North Korean nuclear issue.
