한국 본 글로벌 벤처기업의 기술혁신의 동인과 성과 (The Antecedents and Consequences of Technological Innovation in Korean Born Global Venture Firms)

최근 정보기술의 급격한 발전과 산업의 성숙기 도래로 인한 저성장으로 혁신적 기술기반의 벤처기업이 주목받고 있다. 특히 창업초기부터 해외시장을 목표로 하는 ‘본 글로벌 기업’에 대한 관심이 높다. 본 연구는 국제신생벤처이론, 자원준거이론과 네트워크이론의 관점에서 우리나라 ‘본 글로벌 벤처기업(BGV)’의 기술혁신의 동인과 성과를 규명한다.
벤처기업으로 설립초기부터 기술역량을 기반으로 해외시장 개척을 지향하여 해외매출비중이 높은 우리나라 본 글로벌 기업에 대한 실증분석으로 다음의 결과를 확인하였다. 첫째, 본 글로벌 벤처기업의 핵심역량인 기술혁신의 선행요인으로 경영자의 기술지향 특성, 협업 네트워크 및 정부지원은 연구개발투자와 지식재산(Intellectual property)에 미치는 영향이 상이함을 확인하였다. 경영자의 기술기반 지식의 특성과 외부 이해관계자들과의 협력 네트워크는 연구개발에 유의한 영향을 미치는 반면에 정부지원은 지식재산에 유의하게 정(+)의 영향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 기술혁신의 선행요인별 특성에 따라 영향에 차이가 있음을 의미한다. 둘째, 기술혁신의 투입과 산출관점에서 연구개발투자가 투입요소로서 혁신성과인 지식재산에 유의하게 긍정적 관계가 있음을 확인하였다. 셋째, 기술혁신과 국제화의 관계에 있어 연구개발투자는 직접적으로 유의한 영향을 미치지 않지만 지식재산은 국제화 성과에 유의하게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 연구결과는 본 글로벌 벤처기업의 핵심역량인 기술혁신의 동인에 차별적 영향이 존재하므로 요인별 특성을 인지하여 관리하고 국제화 성과로 성장을 실현하기 위해서는 기술혁신의 효과성 측면에서 연구개발투자와 지식재산역량의 균형적인 관리가 중요함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 우리나라 ‘본 글로벌 벤처기업’의 기술혁신에 주목하여 투입과 산출관점에서 정의하고 이의 결정요인과 국제화에 대한 영향을 실증적으로 규명했다는 점에 의미가 있다. 연구결과는 ‘본 글로벌 벤처기업’의 본원적 경쟁력인 기술리더십 강화와 국제화를 통한 지속적인 성장을 위한 전략적 의사결정에 실무적인 시사점을 제시한다.

영어초록

This study is to identity the antecedents and consequences of technological innovation in Korean born global venture firms(BGF), based on international new venture, resource-based and network theory. The antecedents of technological innovation are considered as CEO technology oriented characteristics, collaboration network and government support. Technological innovation is classified into R&D investment and intellectual property(IP) in the perspectives of input and output. The data of Korean born global venture firms was analyzed for the empirical hypothesis test by PLS-SEM statistical method. The key findings are as follows. First, CEO technology driven characteristics and collaboration network are positively influenced on R&D investment, while government support is positively impacts on intellectual property. It means that the drivers of technological innovation have different influences on input and output factors. Second, R&D investment also has positive impact on intellectual property as our expectation. This implies that born global venture firms should manage the technological innovation capability effectively balanced in input and outcome activities. Third, in relationship between technological innovations and international performance, R&D investment has no substantially impact on international performance, while intellectual property influences positively on international performance. It is also confirmed that intellectual property mediates positively the relationship between R&D investment and international performance. This research provides practical implications that technological innovation such as R&D investment and intellectual property have critical roles for international performance and also the key drivers of technological innovation may have different impacts. This study will be meaningful in that it confirms the roles of technological innovation in Korean born global venture firms, defines it in terms of R&D investment input and output, and empirically investigates its determinants and impacts on internationalization.
