조각보의 기하학적 형태가 지닌 조형성 연구 (A Study on the Formativeness in Geometric Forms of 'Jogakbo')

초록

현대사회는 수없이 많은 다양성과 변화를 통해 발전해 왔다. 인류는 이러한 변화의 과정을 다음 세대에 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 다각적인 노력과 연구를 지속하고 있다. 그 중 연구자는 이러한 역사적 과정이 쌓이고 과거에 충실한 결과물인 전통의 유산들이 합리적 방향성을 가지고 이어나갈 때 확실한 경쟁력을 가질 수 있다고 판단하고 이에 대한 노력과 연구가 필요하다고 본다. 민족 고유의 창의적 조형의식, 색채감각, 예술성은 소중한 문화 자산이며 가치이다. 전통은 우리가 유지, 계승해야 할 중요한 문화요소이다. 더불어 이 시대가 요구하는 예술의 목적과 기능에 따른 새로운 창의적 시도는 중요한 사명이자 의의가 된다.
전통 조각보는 조선 시대 여인들의 삶의 수많은 희노애락을 담고 있다. 직물이 귀하던 시절 조각천을 아껴 생활에 필요한 용품으로 만들어 썼던 조각보는 자투리 천을 연결하여 면을 구성하는 방식으로 인해 의도치 않은 자연스러운 미적 감성을 보여주고 있다. 또한 오늘날은 예술 작품으로 재평가되어 여러 분야에서 다양한 용도로 쓰이며 한국을 대표하는 전통 공예의 한 분야로 현재는 독자적 위상을 계승하고 있다. 실과 천의 만남은 직선 혹은 곡선, 사선의 형태로 기하학적 구조의 반복성을 지닌 수직· 수평과 교차의 특성을 보이고 전통 조각보의 겹보의 겹침은 현재에서는 홑보의 중첩 이미지로 변화 발전되어 무한한 가능성을 보여주고 있다.
현존하는 조각보는 대부분 조선 후기의 것으로서 논문에서의 전통은 조선조 조각보의 연구임을 제시한다. 본 연구는 전통 조각보의 개념과 조형적 특징에 대해 기술하고 기하학적 형태가 지닌 특성과 동시대적 미의식으로 재해석된 조각보 작품에서 보이는 교차와 중첩의 효과들을 기하추상의 대가인 피트 몬드리안(Piet Mondrian 1872~1944)의 수직, 수평 구조와 더불어 살펴보았으며 단순한 형태와 패턴의 반복을 미니멀리즘 작가들의 작품을 사례로 분석하였다. 아울러 조각보를 모티브로 작업하는 국내외 작가들의 사례를 소개함으로써 현대적 접근으로의 가능성이 있는 조각보의 조형성 연구에 초점을 두었다. 조선 시대 평범한 여인들에 의해 제작된 전통 조각보의 기하학적 구성과 특성을 근거로 동시대의 예술작업으로 발전함에 있어 본 연구가 현대화, 세계화에 발맞춰 조각보의 가치를 확대하는 계기가 되길 바란다.

영어초록

Contemporary society has made its process through numerous varieties and changes, and the human kind continues to make effort in order to convey such procedures of changes to next generations. I observe a necessity of the succession of traditional heritages from the past in a reasonable way. A nation's creative aesthetic consciousness and the sense of color are precious cultural stock and value as well as the original artistic property. Tradition is a flow that we should procure and inherit, so it must be passed down in progressive and active way. In addition, the innovative endeavors following the new functions and aims required by the present period are significant responsibility and key elements for the tradition successors.
The tradition 'Jogakbo' in Korea contains all sorts of emotions of the women in the Joseon Dynastry period. Jogakbo was used as supplies in daily life when fabric was scarce. Consisting of spare textiles connected each other, Jogakbo's flat surface exhibits natural aesthetic senses unintended. Its use in diverse fields today attributes to the reevaluation on it, and has made it a representative genre of Korean traditional crafts. The encounter of thread and textile displays the quality of the intersections between vertical and horizontal lines that has the repetition of geometrical structure in straight line or diagonal line, while the overlapping of Gyupbo(multi-layered cloth) of Jogakbo has now developed in the image of Hotbo(single cloth)'s superposition; these all shows infinite possibility of Jogakbo in its artistic form and structure.
Since the existing Jogakbos are those of the late Joseon Dynasty period, this research suggests that the study of Jogakbo's tradition would be limited within the time. Therefore, this study tried to compare the Korean traditional Jogakbo with the constitution of vertical and horizontal lines in the paintings of Mondrian who represents geometric abstraction in art. As a result, I observed that the crossing and piling‘s effect in contemporary Korea's Jogakbo with its geometrical forms reinterpreted today rivals to the western artistic forms. This study also exemplifies the minimalist works to support it and to analyze the simple forms composed with repetitive patterns in Jogakbo. Moreover, this study focuses on the investigation of Jogakbo's formativeness equipped with the possibility of contemporary approaches by introducing the cases of domestic and international artists who work with the Jogakbo's motive. In the development of the traditional Jogakbo made by ordinary women in Joseon Dynasty period toward the contemporary art works, on the basis of its geometric structure and property, this research is expected to provide a momentum so as to expand Jogakbo's artistic value in parallel with modernization and globalization.
