초록

Translation quality is key in discussing translation, and the criteria that make a “good” target text are indispensible to the discussion of translation quality. Despite endless debate on the issue, the academic community has yet to agree on an explicit standard of what constitutes a “good” target text. Likewise, translation assessment has been done according to subjective criteria set by individuals without clear standards. The purpose of this study is to propose a systematic and consistent framework of translation assessment. The study categorizes translation tests according to function and purpose in light of Horguelin & Brunette’s(1998) definition of the function of Translation Quality Assessment(TQA), and then attempts to establish assessment models for each category. By providing a descriptive and prescriptive model of TQA, the study has the following expected contributions: first, establish clear standards to determine a “good” target text and evaluate potential translation competency; second, enhance the translation competency of learners with an assessment model that provides feedback; and third, better prepare student so they enter the market as competent professional translators. The proposed TQA model can be applied not only to the translation classroom but also situations where assessment takes place, drawing more systematic and consistent results.
