초록

코로나19 시기 한국과 베트남 사이에서 발생한 대구발(發) 다낭행 비행기 탑승객 격리 조치 사건(일명 바인 미 Bánh mì 사건)과 아시아나 항공기 회항 사건은 한국과 베트남의 관계, 특히 베트남(인)에 대한 한국인의 사회적 인식에 부정적인 영향을 미친 두 사례이다. 본 논문은 이 두 사건을 중심으로 한국 언론의 일차적인 대응과 정보의 생산방식을 검토하고, 인터넷 공간에서 불거진 논쟁과 가짜뉴스의 양산을 통해 혐오가 구성, 생산, 확산, 강화되는 과정을 고찰한다.
본문의 구체적인 내용은 아래와 같다. 2장에서는 질병과 외국인 혐오, 언론의 상관관계를 검토하고 본 논문의 의의를 고찰하였다. 3장에서는 외교적 갈등의 배경이 되는 코로나19 시기 베트남의 방역 조치를 살펴본다. 4장에서는 두 사건의 구체적인 맥락과 이에 따른 언론과 미디어의 대응 및 반응을 서술하였다. 5장에서는 언론과 미디어를 통해 나타난 베트남(인)에 대한 혐오의 양상과 성격을 분석하였다.
다낭 바인 미 사건과 아시아나 회항 사건은 무분별하거나 악의적인 언론보도, 유튜브와 인터넷 커뮤니티 발(發) 가짜뉴스가 매개가 되어 베트남에 대한 한국인의 인식 한쪽에 자리 잡고 있던 혐오를 촉발하였다. 미디어에 나타나는 혐오를 분석한 결과 이는 한국(인)의 경제적 위계에 의한 우월감, 과거 양국 사이 역사로 인한 암묵적인 적대감과 민족/인종적 편견, 여성 혐오적(성차별적) 태도를 담지하고 있음을 밝혀내었다.
마지막으로 최근에 발생한 ‘이태원 참사 코스프레’ 사례를 통해 혐오의 재생산과 확산을 예방할 방법을 살펴본다. 해당 사건은 상대 국가에 대한 문화적 몰이해와 가짜뉴스를 경계하는 목소리 그리고 대사관 차원에서의 적극적인 대응이 추가적인 ‘키보드 전쟁’과 ‘혐베’의 확산을 방지했다는 점에서 정부, 언론, 사회가 마땅히 져야 할 책임과 역할을 제시하는 긍정적인 사례라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the case of the quarantine of passengers on a flight from Daegu to Da Nang (also known as the Bánh mì incident) and the return of the Asiana flight were two cases that negatively affected Korea-Vietnam diplomatic relations, especially the social perception of Vietnam. Focusing on these two incidents, this paper examines the primary responsibility of the Korean media and the method of information production, and considers the process of constructing, producing, spreading, and reinforcing hatred through debates in the online space and the mass production of fake news.
The contents of the article are as follows. Chapter 2 examines the relationship between disease, xenophobia and the media and considers the implications of this thesis. Chapter 3 examines Vietnam's quarantine measures during the COVID-19 era, which is the background to the diplomatic conflicts. Chapter 4 describes the detailed context of the two incidents and the response or reaction of the media and press. Chapter 5 analyses the aspects and characteristics of anti-Vietnamese hatred expressed through the press and media.
The Da Nang Bánh mì and the Asiana flight return incident, mediated by indiscriminate or malicious media reports and fake news from YouTube and online communities, triggered hatred that had been on one side of Koreans' perception of Vietnam. The analysis of the hatred in the media revealed that it included a sense of superiority due to the economic hierarchy of Korea(n), implicit hostility due to the history between the two countries, ethnic/racial prejudice, and sexist attitudes (misogyny).
Finally, we will look at ways to prevent the reproduction and spread of hate through the recent case of “Itaewon disaster cosplay”. The incident is a positive example that shows the responsibility and role of the government, media and society, as voices of caution against cultural ignorance of the other country and fake news, and active response at the embassy level, prevented the spread of further “keyboard war” and “hate”.
