예비유아교사의 텃밭활동에 나타나는 돌봄의 의미 (How pre-service early childhood teachers discovered themeaning of caring through vegetable gardening)

초록

본 연구는 예비유아교사들을 대상으로 대학교육과정에서 실시한 텃밭활동 중에 경험하는 돌봄의 정서, 돌봄의 행위, 돌봄의 관계 형성 등을 알아봄으로써 식물을 돌보는 일이 돌봄을 실천하는 유아교사가 되도록 준비시키는 일에 기여하는 바를 알아보고자 하였다. 41명의 예비유아교사들을 대상으로 약 6개월 동안 주1회씩 학교수업의 형태로 텃밭활동이 이루어졌으며, 텃밭일지와 면담자료, 그리고 연구자의 현장노트를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과로는 긍정적 자아관, 여성성, 공 감, 연민, 교감 등의 정서를 바탕으로 하여 돌봄을 실천하고 식물과의 돌봄 관계는 유아, 친구, 농업인에게로 확장되며 궁극적으로는 생명의 의미를 재구성하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 예비유아교사들이 텃밭활동을 통하여 유아교사의 자질로서의 돌봄 능력을 체험하고 기르며, 생태적 위기 시대에 요구되는 생태적 감수성을 함양하고 있음을 보여준다. 따라서 텃밭활동은 돌봄의 기회 제한으로 돌봄 능력 함양이 어려운 유아교사교육과정의 대안이 될 수 있음을 제안할 수 있다.

영어초록

The notion of developing and demonstrating care for the welfare and being of young students is traditionally handled in teacher training programs through examining and discussing the application of various theories. This study seeks to determine whether a vegetable gardening experience can better help  pre-service early childhood teachers develop the practice of caring, by looking into the emotion engendered by the acts and the quality of the caring relationship that the students experienced through vegetable gardening.
Forty-one early childhood pre-service students from P University participated in the study. Data, collected through students’ journals, interview transcripts and field notes, were analyzed qualitatively.
Analyses of the data reveals that the participants recognized a positive self-awareness of their caring capacity and femininity. The notion of femininity that emerged in this study is likened to the love and devotion embodied in the traditional mother and daughter relationship. In addition, the caring relationship felt by the teachers as being intrinsic to caring for the vegetables  expanded for them to encompass children, colleagues and farmers. The students  came to be aware of a correlation between caring for vegetables and caring for children. The participants  also experienced a sense of coherence with their colleagues and better understanding and rapport with farming and farmers. Finally, they saw the  relationships inherent in caring for vegetables and caring for their charges and fellow human beings as being intertwined with, and a part of, the meaning of life itself. 
The journals, interviews and field notes are testimony that the resonating levels of relational meaning inherent in the vegetable gardening activity were preparatory, influential, and, indeed, part of the students’ process of developing a capacity for caring. Clearly, the study more than suggests that a hands-on experience holds greater potential for developing a capacity for caring than does a theory-oriented teacher training program.
