학교 건축물에서의 목재 활용 방안 모색 (Wood Utilization in School Buildings)

초록

목재는 환경 친화적이고 심리적 이점을 지닌 건축재료로, 교육시설에 적합하다. 그러나 한국에서는 목재활용을 장려하는 제도와 사례가 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 일본의 정책과 사례를 분석하여 국내 학교건축에서 목재활용을 촉진할 전략을 제공한다. 또한, 일본의 우수사례로 평가받고 있는 3층 목조학교를 방문조사하여 건축방법과 비용을 조사 및 분석하였고, 국내에는 목조학교 사례가 부족하기 때문에 학교 외 목조건축물을 분석하여 건축비용을 비교한다. 또한 본 연구는 목재 활용 비율의 단계적 접근과 비율에 따른 기준을 제안한다.

영어초록

This study aims to provide essential data to guide policies and establish standards for wooden school buildings in South Korea, addressingthe current lack of specific guidelines and examples for wooden construction in schools. Wood, a sustainable building material withpsychological and environmental benefits, is particularly suitable for educational settings. However, South Korea currently lacks the legal andinstitutional frameworks to encourage its use in school construction, with few examples of such buildings available. To better understandwood’s potential in school buildings, this study analyzes Japanese policies, case studies, construction costs, and wood utilization data. Itincludes site visits to notable Japanese wooden schools endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) and other bodies, assessing wood use, construction costs, and architectural elements. Given the limited examples of wooden schoolbuildings in Korea, the study also considers non-school wooden buildings domestically. The findings reveal that, as of 2020, 73.9% of newschool facilities in Japan incorporated wood, supported by updated building codes allowing for safe three-story wooden school structures. Theaverage construction cost for Japanese schools with high wood utilization is around 400,000 yen per square meter, while similar woodenbuildings in Korea average 4.06 million KRW per square meter. Based on these insights, the study recommends a phased approach forinterior wood design in Korean schools, with a minimum target wood utilization rate of 40-50%. Higher utilization rates may requirethoughtful design to avoid potential discomfort. This research supports sustainable wood utilization in Korean school buildings, suggestingsmall-scale wooden schools or wooden interior designs as practical starting points. It is expected to serve as a foundational resource forfuture studies focused on developing specific design and construction guidelines for wooden school buildings in South Korea.
