紙·筆·墨 매체의 철학적 고찰 (A Philosophical Study on 'Ji-Pil-Muk' Media)

초록

본 연구는 書畵예술의 대표적인 재료인 紙·筆·墨을 철학적 관점에서 새롭게 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 지필묵은 예로부터 학문과 교양의 상징적 존재로서 지식인의 필수적인 생활 품목이었다. 서화가들은 지필묵에 단순한 질료 이상의 철학적, 상징적 의미를 부여하였고, 서화활동은 禪僧과 지식인들의 修行의 방편으로 인식되어 왔으며 현재까지도 문화, 생활, 예술 등 각 분야에서 널리 사용되고 있다. 근래에는 특히 교육학, 미술치료학, 심리학 등의 분야에서 수묵화, 문인화, 한국화, 서예 등 書畵활동의 교육적, 치유적 의미를 규명하는 연구가 활발하다.
연구자는 이 같은 서화 활동의 교육적, 치유적 의미가, 사용자의 지각에 영향을 끼치는 지·필·묵의 매체성과 관련이 있다고 본다. 지필묵 매체성은 매체의 상징적 의미와 함께 그 물료적, 현상적 특성을 통해 분석이 가능하다.
본 연구는 지·필·묵 분석을 위해 서양의 매체철학적 관점을 끌어 쓴다. 매체철학적 관점은 매체성을 현상학적, 존재론적인 접근을 통해 철학적으로 해명하기 때문에 새로운 관점에서 지필묵을 살펴볼 수 있기 때문이다. 지필묵 매체성 분석을 통해 새롭게 알아낸 사실은 다음과 같다.
지·필·묵은 물료적, 현상적 특성 자체가 매우 명상적이고, 靜觀的이며 존재론적인 특성을 지닌다. 나아가 지·필·묵 매체에는 주역적, 음양론적 가치가 내재되어 있다. 그러므로 지필묵을 사용하는 것은 사용자의 가치관, 의지, 감정 등 내면의 세계를 표출하는 주체적인 활동이 되는 동시에 매체에 내재된 음양론적, 주역적 가치체계를 사유하는 철학적 과정이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to uncover the philosophical meanings and significance of the traditional artistic media collectively known as Ji-Pil-Muk, encompassing 紙(paper), 墨(ink), and 筆(brush), from a philosophical perspective. Throughout history, Ji-Pil-Muk, comprising paper, brush, and ink, has been an indispensable tool for intellectuals, symbolizing scholarly pursuits. Artists have imbued Ji-Pil-Muk with philosophical and symbolic significance, transcending its mere materialistic interpretations. Painting activities are recognized as tools for '修行' (meditation and practice), utilized in the realms of culture, lifestyle, and the arts. In recent years, there has been active research, especially in the fields of education, art therapy, psychology, and the like, to clarify the educational and therapeutic significance of 書畵(calligraphy and painting) activities such as ink wash painting, literati painting, traditional Korean painting, calligraphy, and other artistic endeavors.
The researcher believes that the educational and therapeutic significance of such calligraphy and painting activities is related to the mediumship of Ji-Pil-Muk, influencing users' perceptions. The mediumship of Ji-Pil-Muk can be analyzed through its material and phenomenological characteristics, along with the symbolic meanings associated with the medium. This study draws upon a Western philosophical perspective on media to analyze Ji-Pil-Muk. A media philosophical perspective allows a philosophical exploration of the mediumship through phenomenological and ontological approaches, providing a novel lens to examine Ji-Pil-Muk. Through the analysis of Ji-Pil-Muk's mediumship, the following findings have been newly discovered.
The mediumship of Ji-Pil-Muk possesses both material and phenomenological characteristics that are profoundly contemplative, meditative, and objective(靜觀的), as well as ontological. Furthermore, the Ji-Pil-Muk medium inherently encapsulates essential principles of the I Ching(周易) and yin-yang(陰陽). Therefore, using Ji-Pil-Muk transforms into an autonomous and influential endeavor, allowing users to express their values, intentions, and emotions, while simultaneously engaging in a philosophical process of contemplating the inherent values of the I Ching(周易) and yin-yang(陰陽) embedded in the medium.
